Mississippi State transfer QB Sawyer Robertson commits to Baylor

Mississippi State transfer QB Sawyer Robertson‍ committed to Baylor on Tuesday evening following his official visit over the weekend. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound prospect will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Robertson signed with Baylor over TCU. This quickly became a head-to-head battle between the Big 12 rivals for the priority quarterback. Ultimately, it was the Bears who came away with the blue-chip prospect.

As a three-year starter at Lubbock Coronado High School, Robertson threw for 12,256 yards and 146 touchdowns with just 23 interceptions while completing 64% of his passes. He also ran for 475 yards and 12 scores.

A four-star prospect, Robertson was a top 150 player in the nation for the 2021 class. He held offers from Arizona State, Arkansas, Louisville, Florida State, TCU, Texas, USC, and Wisconsin, among others but chose to commit to playing both football and baseball at Mississippi State.

Does Shapen transfer to liberty?

Jk

Amazing how an at best 8-4 team pulled off a top 20 class and we won the conference and the sugar bowl and kinda didn't really do a ton with it

I think a lot of tcu commits gonna transfer in the next year or so esp after seeing how they got duped

Will be interesting if this qb can elevate our receiver play and we can put the ball In the air for more than 8 yards vertically at a time next year

He's mobile within the pocket, but he's not going to be much of a runner. He only ran for 553 yards and 13 TDs in 46 games in high school.

But he threw for 12,148 on 64.5 percent passing with 146 touchdowns and just 22 picks.

There are a few plays in his junior year hudl highlights where he takes off running when he sees open real estate in front of him. I think when talking about a quarterback's athleticism, there's essentially two categories: mobility in the pocket, and ability to scramble. A quarterback's 40 time is not a great indicator of ability to scramble. Instincts are a big part of it. Blake Bortles tore us a new one on the ground and put up some respectable rushing numbers in the NFL, and his 40 time was awful
The fact that he averaged more than 185 yards rushing per season with a 4.4 ypc average his last three years in high school tells you he's pretty mobile because that mean's he didn't take many sacks in more than 1,350 dropbacks.

Granted, their offense got the ball out of his hands pretty quickly, but that's still a good average for a pocket passer.
These stats plus his film makes me think he has great pocket awareness and knows how to extend the play.

But don't count on him getting yards with his legs at the college level. He's not dual threat by any means.

Oh cool. I'll bump this post the first time he scrambles for a first down. I really don't understand the point of making these weird absolute statements. He's not going to be RG3, but I actually think he's got underrated athleticism. His 247 scouting report even mentions that he's effective with occasional designed runs

I can't imagine he leaves being the backup @ Mississippi State to be the backup at Baylor. Gotta think the job is his to lose.

Top athletes don't mind competition. I'm sure he thinks he is the better QB and nothing was given to him. Now he will have to prove it in Spring training. If Shapen can't beat him out then that's his fault. He had a 2 year head start with thr playbook

What does this mean for his transfers in the future? Since he entered portal now, is he only able to leave as a grad transfer in the future?

just based on the stars and the schools that recruited him.. he will be QB1. You did see what our QB1 this year, right?

He did say that he chose Mississippi state because of football AND baseball. Will he play for Baylor baseball, too? We could use some help there as well

Yes i did i see our QB 1 this season. I also saw his couple of starts and spring when he was named QB1 Problem is he should have been QB 3

This magnifies how terrible the decision to bench Bohannon and then not to play Drones was. We are in a situation of hoping and praying someone's backup will be our starter

That's a good question. If he doesn't win the starting job, can he immediately enter the portal again?

Also, hopefully we're still chasing other qualified QBs as it's likely a good assumption that Shapen's in the portal if he loses the starting job which would otherwise put us right back in the same lack of depth situation.

I believe you can. I cannot recall off the top of my head who it was, but there was a QB this past year who transferred to Western Kentucky in the spring, but by the first day of classes in the fall, he was at Troy.

Sees our offense and our starting qb and Im sure is confident will win the job comfortably. Doesn't hurt that tcu gets wiped off the field in the most embarrassing loss in cfb history. Miss St played UGA this year and it was 17-12 at half.

Who said tcu getting run off the field wouldn't help us? Paying immediate dividends. (I don't think the second part played a factor but the obsession with this discussion over the last few weeks made me include it.)

Who knows if that played any role in his decision. My guess is the fact that TCU still has something like 4 QBs on their roster even with Duggan departing and Jackson entering the portal likely was a much bigger factor for him.

True, I wonder if a lot of middle of the road QBs were trying to transfer in knowing they would only have to try and beat one guy. Glad we got maybe a good one.

Since any more it's like the Wild West with the portal and NIL, that's probably true. At any rate, however things shake out, the odds are both Shapen and Robertson won't be on our roster for the full 2023 season which is why we best be chasing other additional QBs through the portal and/or through a possible overlooked or late bloomer HS graduate.

You only get one freebie transfer. On the second or later you have to sit out a year unless the school you are leaving signs a waiver to allow you to transfer. That is the situation we have with our WBB player who transferred from Kentucky. She had transferred to Kentucky from Utah. The Kentucky coach won't sign the waiver, even though she did so for others that had the same situation. So, it is up to the school as to whether to sign the waiver if it is not the first transfer.

This is clearly great news, but we need to get him some help at WR and TE. The guys we picked up from Arkansas and North Texas are a start…but the WR corp we had this past year aren't cutting the mustard.

Yeah, I don't know if I'm ready to say that the quarterback room as a whole is better. We still need one more scholarship player. Maybe someone like that Carson May kid from Indiana

And does Sharpen stay as a backup or could he transfer

Clearly I'm happy to get this kid, but given his relative inexperience and sample size of production in garbage time, I would t say it's set it stone he will supplant Shapen. If anything, this should push Shapen to get in the film room, work on his mechanics, hit the weight room, etc bc the position will not be gifted to him this year. My last post still holds true in that we need much better receivers on board.

I don't think there's anything wrong with our returning group of receivers IMHO. you could put me on a team with Calvin Johnson, Jerry Rice, and Chad Ochocinco and they wouldn't look particularly good. That's not to say that our receivers are great. I actually think we've stepped our game up in the last year and a half with wide receiver recruiting. Hal Presley, Jordan Nabors, Armani Winfield, and the kid from Arkansas were all really good pick ups

Didnt Max Duggan have an awful year last year in 2021? Maybe Shapen can be our Duggan in 2023 with the pressure from the QB room and bring us to a more palatable Natty game

We will see. I was not particularly impressed with the WR corps this past year. A lot of that could be tallied up to Shapen holding on to the ball for far too long and not hitting WRs, but I saw a lot of sloppy route running and an inability to get open. Route running is coachable, so hopefully there is a big improvement from 22 to 23.

Yeah I think so. Even with high confidence anybody whose competed knows with 3 or 4 guys vying for a spot a lot of variables can factor in. You might be the "best" and outperform but that doesn't guarantee the spot. Coaches might prefer certain style, rhythm, "leadership," tenure.. It is subjective if close.

Going somewhere with only 2 viable options makes it a much cleaner picture. Im sure that had the most to do with it. Im surprised though with our system. Getting the Ark Wr and some O line help Im sure factored in as well.

I'm super optimistic about the weapons that Sawyer will have around him. Upgrades at RB, WR, and OL. Hopefully Aranda gets our WR in the weight room. I want to see DK Metcalfs on the field.

Agree with this. Josh Cameron really came on as a solid target in the second half of the season as well. They are a young group that should hopefully continue to develop.
