I don't go to SA often anymore & when I do, I don't eat Mexican food. Alamo Cafe is a chain in the city with good good. There probably are lots of neighborhood places that are pretty good. Sometimes, they can be the best. Again, my experience was years ago so things might have changed.

Also, there are different kinds of Mexican food: TexMex is not the same as the food in California or New Mexico. Lastly, it's very subjective. One person might love a place while someone else hates it.

La Fonda on Main in SA is my go-to. Been in business since 1932 at same location. I made my first trip to La Fonda back in 1965 with my Nana, as she lived in SA: Havana and Mexico City before that Been going back ever since. In fact, I'll be there Wednesday night

So true. We used to call them "holes in the wall". They tend to be great…. until the health department shuts them down!

Joe T's isn't even in the top 10 Mexican restaurants in Ft. Worth.

Hey, thanks for the tip about El Patio in Austin! It's always awesome to find a great Mexican restaurant, especially near college campuses. Those Friday night hangouts must be a blast! I'm actually all the way in New Zealand, and speaking of delicious food experiences, there's this fantastic Asian restaurant Auckland CBD that I recently tried. The flavors were out of this world, and if you ever find yourself down here, it's a must-visit! From sushi to ramen, they've got it all. It's amazing how food brings people together, whether it's enjoying Tex-Mex in Austin or savoring Asian cuisine in Auckland.

You can tell it's compiled by someone who knows more about football than Mexican food. Should be blank for every town east of Tyler or north of Dallas.

I'll never understand why anyone thinks this place is good. I have it as the most overrated Tex-Mex restaurant in Texas.

(One man's opinion certainly does not make for a respectful or even factually accurate post. Take it as social theater, at best)

Ninfas, a (average) chain, for Baylor?
That's simply embarrassing......

I miss Pancho's! Nothing better on a Sunday night for a college student on a budget when the cafeterias were closed.

Chuy's in Waco opened in Dec 09. There is a lot of good Mexican in Waco. Hecho en Waco, Maria Mescala etc.

Apparently Ninfa's was also number 1 in Houston as well next to Rice and UH. Never heard of the Mexican place they have for UT Matt's El Rancho.
Matt's is the best

The BEST Mexican restaurants are NEVER the chains. Most educated people know this.

Most mexian restaurants in Waco are tex mex so not traditional Mexican food. Even the ones run by Mexican owners have mixed in tex mex because that's what moat ppl like. Best places in Waco are the food trucks. I Personally like taquisa waco if your looking for a good taco.

Total agreement, hence my comment about Ninfa's. Good food, but nothing to do with Mexico.

Most people would be underwhelmed by 'real' Mexican food

Pappasito's has some of the best fajitas of any place I've been. The rest of their food is good but nothing special. There's no place that has the best of everything, it kind of depends on what you want.

My sister in law ate at a Mexican place in Denmark. Said it wasn't bad but the beans tasted like pork and beans.

I think Los Cucos is the best I've had in Waco.

Chuy's has grown almost into a national chain over the past 10, but it is still very good with a cool vibe. It might be more common now and isnt a regionally unique thing anymore but it is still good.

I agree about the 3 local places mentioned. I dont dislike them but I'm not sure why other locals think they are just awesome.
Its really good for outside of Texas.

Literally probably the one of the best chains you can find if your in a place like Bowling Green KY and traveling and don't know what the good local only Mex is

Los Barrios was a real hole in the wall when it first opened (that was about 40 years ago) - they didn't have a liquor license so you could bring your own beer with you. They have probably moved out of the hole in the wall location to a bigger space but I remember the food being really good back in the day.

Los Barrios is still in the old Dairy Queen on Blanco. The low brick wall dividing the dining room is the old outer wall of the DQ between the inside dining room and the patio. Or at least it was that way the last time I was in SA in 2021.

I liked it quite a bit 2010-2014, and it was still pretty busy. It's not great food, but it hit the spot. My friend was there when a mouse fell out of the ceiling one time
