The Underrated Performer for Baylor against Cincinnati
It was nice to see Baylor shake things up on offense this week during their 32-29 victory over Cincinnati. While it might not be sustainable against everyone left on their schedule, it was definitely a breath of fresh air.
The Bears were able to utilize a short passing attack that allowed Blake Shapen (25-of-42, 316 yards, 1TD) to get the ball out his hands quickly to his playmakers without being crushed behind a bad offensive line. We also got a glimpse of Ketron Jackson’s ability to make plays down the field, as he had his best performance as a Bear behind 130 yards receiving on five catches.
Baylor was also able to take advantage of Monaray Baldwin’s speed while getting him free with motion packages and quick routes out in space, as he finished the day with a team-high seven catches, but unfortunately, they only mounted to 49 yards.
This week’s underrated performer was sophomore wide receiver Josh Cameron. We’ve seen flashes from Cameron throughout the season, but nothing of consistent substance.
Cameron finished the day with just three receptions for 46 yards, but he also did an excellent job in the return game helping set up the Baylor offense with good field position on multiple drives. He also got loose for his longest punt return of the season for 41 yards that set the Bears up at the Cincinnati 33-yard line, but unfortunately, Baylor could only turn the field position into three points with a 54-yard field goal from Isaiah Hankins.
The Bears (3-4, 2-3) will need another big performance from Cameron and others this week as they welcome Iowa State (4-3, 3-1) to McLane Stadium for homecoming. Kickoff between Baylor and the Cyclones is set for 2:30 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN 2.
