I really think I am done with college football. Cannot make a fair argument against NIL and the transfer portal, and realignment, but these things have shredded the game by taking away the things that once made college football unique vs. its talent-freeloading Sunday counterpart.
1. One of Us - Back when I was in school athletes were part of student life. You would see them around campus, share some classes, and yes see them at Georges. Of course they had delusions of grandeur like most college athletes today, but for the most part they were planning to stay in school and make progress in case the football thing didn't work out.
I can't imagine students seeing much in common with today's mercenaries who expect to attend 2 schools, if not 3 or 4.
2. Regionalization - The old saying that airplanes eliminate the need to be close may work for logistics and players (check back in with BIG teams next year), but it sucks for fans
Who do I talk crap to if we somehow beat Arizona State when we play? Used to be you could always find whorns, ags and ponies in your office to bet against, but alas, no mas.
3. Hope for brighter days --Remember when recruiting mattered? Or when you could see a first or second year player and say "He's raw, but with time and coaching ..." Yeah, me too ... barely. I think the good coaches will get sick of this at some point and either go pro or back to high school, where they can develop players.
Not sure that the general public shares these sentiments, but the T shirt fans may start to realize that these "kids" are nothing more than less talented versions of their favorite pro teams.
Rant done.
