Leach would be a fantastic get for any team. Unfortunately he is going to go to an institution of football. Baylor is not an institution of football.

So what I'm hearing is Leach did better in his first year with a worse team and worse program than Rhule what Rhule took over.

I grew up watching Leach's tech teams. I saw the 2008 game UT/Crabtree catch game while hawking drinks in the stadium at 15. I have no love for tech. I think it's hilarious that that game and that year is all that they've had to be excited about in the last 50 years or so.

He would have gotten us to bowl eligible every season. Guaranteed. I don't think he would have gotten us much further. In the short term, going to a bowl sounds great. Long term, having a middling bowl game and no sniff of a conference championship would make people restless.

Sure, but this thread is about Leach. Why hold up him up as some great coach? Is this group thinking it would be awesome to only be marginally better?

Wasn't going to happen for two reasons. First there is no way the BOR is approving the hiring of Mike Leach on the heels of Art Briles. He's to quirky and too unreliable. He liable to say anything at any time. They what a vanilla coach.

Second not as convince Leach would take the job as you. You don't want to be the guys who succeeds Briles in this situation and has to deal with all the fallout. You want be the guy who succeeds the you who succeeded Briles.

More over I know Leach is the flavor of the month right now and looks pretty damn good compared to Rhule but he's in his 17th year as a head coach and has one ten win season. Lot of flash but as noted above he's an 8-5 coach.

Leach's group lost to Cal, 37-3. That should end this discussion, but probably won't. The guy has a ceiling and it is too low.

That's true. This thread isn't about Rhule but Leach.

I'm willing to give Rhule another year (mainly because there is nothing I can do about it, so why waste my time), and if he fails we'll turn to someone else.

But the point is someone's ceiling. Of course an 8-5 ceiling is better than an 0-12 cellar.

But if someone told you, "I've seen the future. If you hire So and so Coach, you'll be 8-5 nearly every year but never better." Do you take it?

I don't. I continue to roll the dice to see if we can get another pot of gold. Leach had one great year his entire coaching career. He's not a pot of gold.
