I have not seen it brought up but Purdue fired HC Walters last night.

I understand the situation but 2 years is an awfully short stint. The only other time I remember something like that was us with Dave Roberts, which only caused things to get worse. That said we were still trying to wing it all on the cheap without really committing in those days.

I agree with you that 2 years is too quick. However, with NIL and the transfer portal, the pressure to "WIN NOW" on P4 teams is greater than it ever has been. Especially with how quick we have seen turnarounds at places like Indiana, Colorado, Arizona State make every program feel like they need to see immediate, or fairly immediate, results. These expectations may or may not be fair for programs like Purdue or others on the outside looking in at Colorado, Arizona State, etc. but it is what it is.

Firing Dave Roberts wasn't a/the problem. Hiring him in the first place and replacing him with Kevin Steele were.

Dave Roberts was a disaster, both on the sidelines and in the locker room.

The pressure is coming from the school up the road that has a chance at going to the playoffs in year 1 with their new coach

He absolutely had to get fired.

4-8 his first year
1-11 his second year with Kevin Steele type beat downs.

They were pounded 6 times this year. In those 6 beat downs they were outscored 313 to 23.

Absolutlely. You'll notice I mentioned Indiana. But I think seeing schools like those see almost immediate results puts added pressure on all programs to win quickly. And with transfer portal and NIL there is no excuse for coaches to claim "I just need more time to get my guys in this program and build this program the way I want." I don't think its completely fair to a lot of coaches, but that's the way it is.

On the other hand, you have guys like Neal Brown who have had all the time in the world, and for whatever reason just can't get it done. Got to cut the chord at some point.

I think we could see a trend begin where a HC struggling can turn it all around against his previous record with the right support from the school. Aranda going from 3-9 to 8-4 and potentially better in one season is almost as big an accomplishment as some of these HC's who take over a new program and win right away. In the age of paying big money to players, that may be the more economical way to go on the coaching side rather than blowing it up and starting over. The portal and NIL are what make that a possibility now as well. Neither model would work out or at least not quickly in the pre 2022 world.

I'm talking generally here as general models in the future. I'm not talking Purdue's situation specifically.

My brother and I have been talking a lot about Arizona's situation with Brent Brennan, who is almost certainly going to fail there.

I didn't like that hire when they made it, and his first year was an absolute disaster.

That would be a depressing place to be as a fan. If performance was the only factor, you'd be justified in firing him after one season. But I don't think that's a precedent we want to set in this sport. So they have to wait it out and watch the train wreck for at least another year.

He's basically put himself in the same place Matt Rhule did in his first year at Baylor, but he doesn't have Matt Rhule's track record of rebuilding programs. If he doesn't win next year, he'll completely lose what few fans he still has on his side.
