Looks like we have our starter for week 1 in Jordan-Hare in 2026

This would be huge. I don't know that much about him as a player other than he's a little raw as a passer but is a powerful runner and athletic. I believe the #5 quarterback in a class would be the second best quarterback Baylor has ever recruited from the high school ranks after Jarrett Stidham.
Odell James says hello.

Were recruiting services even a thing back then?
1975 Parade High School All American Team listed Sammy Bickham, who played one year before busting a knee. Best QB prospect I ever saw coming to Baylor.

Odell was definitely the highest rated:

"James was widely considered the state's top prospect. He compiled 5,870 yards of total offense (3,300 rushing and 2,570 passing) over the course of his career, rushing for 54 touchdowns and passing for 24. He had a 25-7-2 record as a starter.

The decision was hard, but he narrowed his list to Florida State, Ohio State, Texas, Nebraska, and Baylor during his senior season."

I was there. He was not good…but hard to tell because neither was anyone else on that team.

He suffered an injury before he ever got here. Furthermore back then it wasnt like today in fact it was quite the opposite. Reedy and staff (the ones who brought him here) were fired before he played a down for us and he ended up being on the roster under Roberts in 98 then primarily under Steele neither of whom utilized him except maybe a couple of plays per season.

Man…just thinking back to those days makes me sad…what a terrible time to be a Baylor fan. 96-2007 were just awful.

Let me tell you it wasn't so hot in the late sixties either. Steele was an improvement over Beall. Think about that for a moment. MBB did finish 2nd a time or two in a VERY WEAK SWC. There was no WBB.

When I was a kid, we went to homecoming the first year Beall was coach, during the imperfect season (0-10). In the warmup before the game, Beall had the team practicing the triple option, which looked like something they had never tried before. When you see your team unable to complete a lateral to the halfback during warmup, you kind of know it's not going to be your day.

He played more than that and other than the first half of a non-con home game against North Carolina State he was almost always terrible. For one thing he struggled to complete a pass if the receiver was more than 5 yards downfield. Given the expectation level he was arguably the biggest flop in our football history (at least in the modern era). Of course it should also be noted that he consistently had little to nothing in the way of talent around him as he was on some awful teams.

There was also a rumor on campus that the reason he chose Baylor was on a recruiting trip to Nebraska some of the players either shoved him around or kicked him out of a party and he vowed to go to Baylor and kick their asses.

I believe Baylor scored 3 points on Nebraska in the years that he was here.

Random, but does anybody remember the thread back on Baylorfans of the guy who allegedly got into a fight with an opposing fan in the bathroom at the Ferrell Center, or something to that effect? It was comedy gold

What happened to all the Johntay Cook talk to Baylor? I recall hearing a lot of buzz about Baylor being the favorite to land him.

I believe our staff lost interest in him

The Alabama kid is a better grab in my opinion anyway

I remember watching Odell James and thinking he wasn't any good. And yes, his passing skills left a lot to be desired. But as time has gone on, my opinion became more nuanced. I can't help but think that he was probably a bit more physically compromised than anyone thought by the time he played for Baylor. Also, I think he would have turned out to be a decent top 25 pct college quarterback if he would have had any solid coaching whatsoever and if he had any semblance of any offensive line. For the most part, I recall he had none of those privileges. I recall Coach Roberts calling our team munchkins. So if we were small on the offensive line, I'm remembering better now---I think we got blasted pretty badly on the offensive line to where Odell James often didn't even have time to even think about making a move. They were already on him in one second. Very very few quarterbacks would have succeeded during those dark times.

Sounds a lot like our protection for our QBs the last couple of years prior to this one.

Would be a good pickup. Started every game as a RS freshman but was kind of passed up on the depth chart this year. Curious where we would play him.

Didn't see it in this thread if I overlooked it, but according to this Alabama article he committed today.

Maybe he was actually part of a trade

How many have we lost to the portal? Is it up to 10 with 2 left to fill. I haven't really kept up closely. I thought we were on the lower end of transfers out relative to others.

Present stats say we have lost 9, gained 6. If I were betting, I'd think by the end it'll probably be a net positive.

I saw a Wisconsin QB who is from Texas entered the portal. I believe he just finished either his true freshman year or red shirt freshman year. Looks like he was a 3 * recruit out of high school. I doubt he is entering the portal to go with the OC to Sam Houston but you never know.

I'm getting more and more excited about next season. With Sawyer and Washington back and Spav calling plays...plus some key additions we have picked up...I'm getting a good feeling about next year.
