Just passing the info along. I was hoping he would end up in Dallas.

Too good of a coach for JJ to be interested in hiring. He'll probably hire Brian Schottenheimer, which will be a downgrade from McCarthy. JJ's a joke.

He's 74 next season. Jerry probably didn't want somebody that was yet another young whipper-snapper.

Not sure how replacing McCarthy is that much of a downgrade. They need somebody with better knowledge of scheming in the current NFL. Schott would be more of the same old stuff, but he might not be as bad as McCarthy with game management, which has been one of the many weaknesses of the team.

I'd rather have a fresher look with some new world skills, at least on the OC role.

If JJ hires BS then I think he'll be looking for a new coach 2-3 yrs from now. Hire coach, fire coach 2-3 yrs later, repeat process. That's JJ, he never learns or is okay with mediocrity as long as he can work with his kids.

I'm thinking if he does hire him it would be conditional with a shorter term deal than usual for a new head coach.

JJ seems intrigued with Whitten. I wouldn't be surprised if he adds him to the new staff and then when he fires the next coach Whitten takes over. Not saying it will work, but it seems like something JJ would do.

The Cowboys had the #1 offense in the NFL in 2023 with McCarthy calling the plays, and somehow managed to not be in the bottom 10 this year with Cooper Rush at QB, no starting-caliber running back and one WR who could catch (thanks for the offseason skill position support, Jerry), so I'm not sure where you're getting that Dallas needed some offensive refresh. He tailored his West Coast offense around Dak and it sent him to the Pro Bowl.

After the COVID year McCarthy won 12 games three straight years, and you could very credibly argue he took those teams about to where their talent says they should've gone. Not to say he didn't make mistakes, but he was by and large (no pun intended) a very quality head coach.

In hindsight, the one unforgiveable game in his tenure was the Green Bay wild card debacle with the 2 seed last season. And that was defensive.

McCarthy was not the problem. He could not win in the postseason so I'm not lamenting his departure all that much, but let's not kid ourselves that Jerry's disastrous approach to free agency didn't put them in a hole when comparing them to the best in the NFC. He is an awful GM and he is the ultimate problem, full stop. Schottenheimer would 100% be a nod to a guy who will let Jerry do whatever he wants and not ask too many questions. He's the least qualified HC we've hired since Dave Campo.

A little trivia. Pete Carroll was Bob Cope's DC in 83 at Pacific. Bob Cope about 10 years later would be Chuck Reedy's DC at Baylor.

The better teams always know the Cowboys plays by their lineup, they showed no deception or variation. They put up good numbers when they had a running game. They couldn't get anywhere in the playoffs when teams were scouting them and their tendencies more thoroughly. The Cowboys could move the ball when their offensive line was healthy and tuned up with high priced players, the running game was a threat and that set up big plays. It doesn't take a genius to make those things work a good bit of the time until you come up against teams with equal talent and far better coaching and game management.

Quinn's defense was also really good, until it was really bad. He couldn't adjust much away from it because his personnel was unique, with hybrid players at crucial spots. Once a team figures out how to adjust the just run you out of the stadium. His offense is doing great because it's new with a hot young qb, D is still not great. His teams typically start hot and gradually decline.

Lots of mediocre teams put up good offensive numbers, and much of it is from playing behind from better opponents or playing other lesser teams. McCarthy was terrible at game management, especially in big games. Schottenheimer is running the same system they were both schooled on that peaked in the 90s before the league evolved. Their staff was a bunch of old retreads, and repeat failure Kellen Moore as Jerry's pet. Hiring him as head coach is among my least favorite options.

McCarthy was never going to get through a playoff schedule by giving away so many disadvantages in gamesmanship. They were always very poor at making adjustments until it was too late, long after opponents had adjusted to them.

He wasn't THE problem, but he was probably the biggest problem in getting to the next level when their talent level was pretty high, before all the injuries and attrition.

None of this matters as long as JJ is the GM. Nothing will ever change. I gave up on the Cowboys a long time ago as I don't feel the need to waste my energy on a perennial failure. I switched to the Texans years ago.

Not sure I will ever get used to saying that.
