The word Development doesn't register with Aranda. Never has.

How the transfer portal is Dave Aranda's last resort and only hope at Baylor

"Less than a week into Baylor's offseason after failing to qualify for a bowl, and it's been a disastrous start. Following Texas' upset win over rival Texas A&M in Austin, 4-star edge rusher Jamarion Carlton, one of the highest-rated defensive commits in Baylor's history, flipped his commitment to the Longhorns. Less than 48 hours later, fellow Bell County native Jamarion Vincent followed his lead and de-committed, joining Michigan's 2026 class.

CBS national writer Shehan Jeyarajah noted just how big a blow these two flips were to Baylor's 2026 class. This negates any remnants of the positive momentum Baylor had about the future that Ryan Roberts of A to Z Sports referenced in the preseason

With that, Aranda will have to step outside and emphasize the use of the transfer portal in a way that he hasn't yet. Now, the Bears did snag Sawyer Robertson from Mississippi State, and have had two portal classes in the top 50 the past two years, according to 247Sports, but last year's additions of edge rushers Matthew Fobbs-White and Emar'rion Winston, as well as Ohio State defensive back Calvin Simpson-Hunt, did nothing to elevate a defensive unit that has consistently struggled since Aranda's arrival in Waco.

The Bears will more than likely already be diving into the portal for a starting quarterback. But, with that 2026 recruiting class being one of the main drivers behind the Baylor administration's decision to extend Aranda's tenure, he needs to face the reality that he doesn't have the luxury to stay true to his roots of high-school-based recruiting. He needs to produce wins, and wins require talent that's able to immediately contribute. And in this age of college football, that happens via transfer portal acquisitions.

So, the Bears will go into 2026 with a level of roster overhaul that Aranda hasn't done yet. The results of that overhaul, and the pieces he adds, will be crucial for a coach already sitting on a smoldering-hot seat."

Word is getting out, unfortunately. It's going to take better than a "top 50" shopping trip to the portal for the team to have any sort of a pulse next year.

That is so damn depressing to read. We have legit just given up.

The guy never once attempted to see who would be taking over for Sawyer next year with some legit playing time when it was obviously available....the guy just isn't a HC....

That's exactly what I was wondering. Why keep Sawyer in a game you can't win, only to risk injury.
And not giving any playing time to the back up was just another blunder on the list of many.

last year's portal pickups seemed to be promising but losing the top safety and two of the better LB's to injury early, and the NT's not panning out, the defense turned into a disaster. The returning players on defense just haven't progressed or have gotten worse. At the end of the year the best performer on defense was a true freshman LB and a walkon safety.

Even if Aranda hits the portal with success, the strength & conditioning is subpar to Big 12 standards.

At the moment, I'm having trouble seeing how we end up anywhere else. Dave would have to pull several rabbits out of the hat in quick succession...

1-11 is very likely. Entire new offense set of players - many 1 year portals graduating....

It's how bad are those 11 losses going to be...... OSU stayed within 7 points in 4 of the losses. We had a very favorable schedule this year - that won't be the case for next year.

New Coach @ Auburn will not be kind for that match-up. He will want to make a statement coming right out of the gate. I would be betting the OVER and Auburn covering in that game.

So far its not looking like the mass exodus we may have expected, so that's a good sign.

Hopefully, we get the rest of them signing officially in the next couple of days.

Put it on paper.

In Carlton's case at least, I've read that Texas was always his first choice. But for some reason he became a higher priority for Texas and they made much bigger NIL offer and reel him in.

I'm actually shocked there haven't been more defections, with two gone and one still looking.

Still plenty of time for it to blow up, similar to what we are accustomed to in the actual football games.

I'm talking about the recruiting class. Though I'm sure there are a few decently talented players on defense that just need some better coaching to make a big improvement.

Current roster plyers are a different category than recruit flips. They still have some time to decide.

How many options do most of them have? The opposite side of the coin of giving up 400 yards per game and having most of your production on offense graduate...

Hopefully we can keep the RB room in shape. I could see that getting pilfered.

I really don't know. I'm not sure how much of it is talent and how much is just their confusion with what they are being coached to do. Some of them surely are just whiffs in recruiting.

But I've seen so many times how the defensive line play affects everyone behind them. This years Cowboys are a good example. Getting a stud defensive tackle has improve the level of play all over the D. Almost instantly. Just getting Kenny Clark wasn't much help. And Ziggy wasn't having a good year. But once you got that other pro bowl stud in the line up next to them they are all kicking ass. The corners are covering much better, the linebackers who looked totally lost are making plays. Its all complimentary play.

I think first we need to get the players some coherent and consistent coaching so they know what they're doing, and understand their responsibilities. Aranda talks about it after every game, but he's not getting his scheme across to the players. They are always confused. They suffer from paralysis by analysist.

It's not as simple as just "the players suck."

Or maybe it is, too, but we don't know as long as the defensive coaching remains the same as it has been the last several years.

That may all well be true, but either way I don't see most of our defensive roster as being in high demand.

Probably not that much. Some programs might try to pick off players they were high on in recruiting that haven't played much yet and wouldn't be huge NIL deals. But they might need depth and or may feel they can still develop them much better, which wouldn't be shocking.

Did we have any significant injuries on the DL? That group got zero push the entire year...which of course makes life tougher for the LBs and DBs.

The few times one of then broke through the line to chase a QB it looked like the OJ Simpson car chase breaking out.

At some point this entire towel of Babel is going to collapse on itself. You will have some blue bloods and a bunch of rubble at the bottom that will be where most of college football teams end up.
