Why has Bu never offered a beefed up Petroleum Engineering program? Doesn't see to make much sense.
Great question.
That train long ago left the station.
The people who became billionaires in the Permian started there 15-40 years ago. Not all were/are engineers or geologists. Many were creative entrepreneurs. Our one guy (who we ran off) was Bob Simpson and he graduated from our business school. He now supports TCU.
The billionaires either inherited ranch land or landed (for the most part) in Midland for one reason or another) liked it, stayed and were the beneficiaries of skill and fortuitous timing.
For the most part, those times are over. The major oil companies will eventually own it all and ride it out to the end. When oil eventually recovers to $100/bbl, the independent operators will sell…they won't miss the opportunity to cash out again.
Texas used to be a place where plaintiffs lawyers make big dollars (see, our law school building).
Tort reform and a very conservative Supreme Court put an end to that.
Will Baylor produce rich graduates? Certainly. But none (or very few) will get big rich in the oil business.
