Read this… looks like McNamee and Yormark will be on the same page.

At the time Yormark was a bit of an outside the box type hire and he has been a home run for the B12. Fingers crossed here. We deserve a bit of luck.

It's either a home run or a Tom Stanton redux

Why is he not continuing the field and stream thing? (I actually think that looks cool. I'm probably their target demo.)

I would think something like that would still require all of his time to be done well, but maybe not. Is he walking away from it?

I mean I think this is the job he wants. This is what he went to school for and spent the first decade of his professional career preparing for.

That's reasonable. Jobs like this don't come along often, so he might feel if there's a window of opportunity he needs to jump through it.

I'd just think the F&S thing, especially with the new channel launch, etc., gives you the opportunity to hit a pretty big lick.

I knew Doug in college at Baylor. No way is this a Tom Stanton redux hire. Doug is a very, very savvy guy, especially when it comes to athletics. He's been involved with BU athletics since college. He knows our fan base very well, he knows the alumni association and donors, and he's a very tough, no nonsense kind of guy. He also has a lot of great executive experience with Magnolia. While it's an unorthodox hire, I think he'll be solid.

Totally. IMO that shows how great of a hire this is. He inherited Field & Stream when it was struggling financially and forced to be online-only and rebuilt it to not only go back to print but also have its own streaming network. He's leaving them waaay better than he found them. And he did the same thing at Magnolia, though the contexts were different. They likely weren't in a financial pickle, but still, he capitalized their potential. I can't imagine his goal, though, wasn't to eventually come back into sports in some way/shape/form.

His passion always has been sports, for sure.

Maybe time for Baylor to start a bass fishing team, hmm???

Money talks. If he conjures up a couple hundred million for NIL PDQ he can hire a decent coach and we can win some games. If not, he will fail.

Pretty much.

Honestly, I don't care who our AD is as long as they hire good coaches, raise lots of money and don't create embarrassing headlines for Baylor University.

This still looks like a weak, Baylor hire to me, but I'll give Doug a fair chance to prove he can (or can't) do those things above before I judge it any more harshly than I already have.

Don't know what you're reading interests are; however, YouTube is much better for "on the 'water" info.

Well if he is a BMD donation magnet as billed. Significantly larger sums of money should be flowing into the NIL box than in the past by the holidays and the next portal signing period. That is the kind of thing that will be proven or exposed quickly . I think this hire can literally start being judged by the spring. It will either show Linda as a savant for athletics or a disaster. For me I'm done with the benefit of the doubt stuff.

I don't know that that's true because if there are relationships that were strained after the Briles fallout or due to poor interactions with Mack Rhoades over the past decade, those will likely take time to mend. And new corporate sponsorships will likely take time to build. So I'll give McNamee a little more time than that. But my ultimate standard for success is pretty simple.

Can you hire good coaches?
Can you maximize Baylor's fundraising operation (whatever that ceiling is)?
Can you avoid scandal?

If he does those three things, I'll be happy with him. If he doesn't, I will not.
PartyBear

Well his own people spinnin for him here are claiming he is the BMDs guy. They love him etc. if true sounds like things are mended with them by naming their guy. The results need to show up quickly -and honestly if the claims are true they will and I hope the claims are true.

Ultimately, the proof will be in the pudding. So we're in complete agreement there. I'm just willing to give him a little more time.

You know what my initial thoughts of the hire were. And they haven't changed a ton. But he's our guy now and will be for the foreseeable future. So I hope he's successful.

It may also be that the money needed to bring in players in this portal window would be coming from money Baylor doesn't have to pay for Aranda's buyout at this time, which would offset somewhat having to get new donor money within a matter of weeks.

I'll keep an open mind. Doesn't matter anyway. I can't do anything about it one way or another.

I hate to say it and no one here wants to hear it, but I still don't think there is a zero chance that Aranda will be coaching here in 2027, depending on how things go next season and what the BMDs tell the new AD. It would be nice to know the conversations at those levels, but we are not going to hear them......and I wouldn't trust anything I hear on this board. All we have been told is that the new AD will review, assess and make decisions on the football program moving forward.
PartyBear

I agree. I bet, it's just my gut feeling, threshold for success next season to get another year is lower now than had we hired an AD, which would take a couple of months. I remember saying making a quick AD call is not going to play out the way posters here thought.

We didn't make a quick hire. We slow played it and still hired the most unqualified candidate on the list of those rumored here (and elsewhere).

If we had made a quick hire, it would have almost certainly been a sitting G5 AD with a coach he (or she) could bring to Waco with him (or her).

This was pretty quick although I admit, and concede to you if this was the type of hire we were planning, I don't know why it couldn't be wrapped up and announced before Thanksgiving. This hire didn't need to drag out for 2 weeks.

Only 41 posts since 2019. Impressive, guy who knew Doug in college.

I'm gonna put this out here as a tribute to an amazing Baylor Bear who is no longer with us.

I lived in Konernot with a guy named Robert Prince. He was a graphic designer and did lots of really cool things for Field and Stream magazine.

He was also an amazing dude. Funny as hell. Creative.

This is his work.

He died of cancer. Cancer sucks.

Unless Aranda's buyout had already been held aside in budget, I don't think retaining him adds money to the pool...

I feel like the next 6 weeks or so will tell us if Aranda's tenure has a shot at redemption depending on staff hires, the players those guys can bring with them, and the January portal haul overall.

If we really do go all-in on boosting Dave's apparent final chance, then I'd expect we need to be 3-0 going into conference play or he's going to be in danger of getting fired after week 4. And if we don't go all-in on supporting him, we'll probably be 1-4 when he gets fired so that we can begin discussions with agents ASAP.

McNamee surely is smart enough to know that his job is 99% fundraising, marketing and schmoozing with donors. 1% has to do with sports directly.

A search firm and BMD's will hire the next football coach. His job will be to arrange a nice press conference to announce the hire, raise more money and shake hands with donors at all events.

He needs to spend about 25% of his time in the office and the rest on the road.

Say what one wants to say about McCaw, I never got the impression his goal was to look like the smartest guy in the room. Hasn't always been the case with BU ADs, if you get my drift.

Ok great news we have a AD now. Let's turn him loose to get a real HC. Since next season under Aranda is going to be painful let's start the rebuilding process NOW!!!!!!!!!!
