Oregon did offer him a lot more money than we could, but contrary to popular belief, it wasn't just about the money. People were getting into his ear about what a big-time prospect he was and how he was too good to play in a conference where his marquee matchup would be against Texas Tech or BYU. I do blame Dave more than anything though, because he agreed to Novosad's demands to not take a quarterback in the previous class. It's one of the most dumb things Dave has done that he doesn't get enough heat for IMHO. Dave really is a guy that you could sell magic beans or Florida swamp land to

Nah, I am not as much of a fan as I used to be. As I said in a past tread, coaches are a dime a dozen. They are a small portion of success and with NIL and the Portal becoming less all the time. Watch Moneyball and then apply to College Football. I find the organizational dynamics between winners and losers interesting.
I find the blaming of coaches very interesting, especially guys that have won before and now are losing/.

You're entitled to that opinion, but I don't know what I said that set you off. Dave and Shawn Bell agreed not to take a quarterback in the previous class in order to woo Novosad. That's a widely known fact, and yes, it did come back to bite us. And not only did we not take a quarterback in the previous class, we literally had done no recruiting at all behind the scenes to develop a contingency plan, all while the guy was taking official visits to Notre Dame, A&M, and Oregon - that's how trusting Dave was of Novosad's "commitment".

While it was a really bad look to have the cornerstone of our recruiting class flip on signing day (foreshadowing to this year, anyone?), it did the opposite of coming back to bite us, because we ended up with Sawyer Robertson. Sawyer has approximately one million more skins on the wall than Novosad, who, in 3 full seasons, has thrown 15 more college passes than you or I have.Youre a clown said:FLBear5630 said:Youre a clown said:FLBear5630 said:Youre a clown said:BUATX2000 said:

I was surprised he has not been mentioned at all among QBs. Even G5 and FCS QBs going ahead of him.

Either has a bad agent or he's shown absolutely no promise/problem child as a backup.

not transferring out already is probably one of the biggest flags for coaches - if he was that much of a competitor he'd have sought actual PT somewhere else by now instead of being very comfortable as a very expensive backup.
I wouldn't be surprised if he just ends up being done because no P4 team is going to overpay him to be a 3rd stringer any longer. In retrospect, I think we dodged a massive bullet there.

As in all professional endeavors, college athletes better be careful with how they trade. You can get away with better dealing one company to get more money somewhere else in the short term. Nah…it's a 4 to 6 year window to make millions of dollars and get a head start on 99% of your cohorts. The incentive is to get as much as you can until the world tells you that you aren't good enough to keep playing.
Imagine if the only thing you were exceptional at (in relation to your peers) had a 4 to 6 year earning window.
You can't possibly overplay your hand in this scenario.

I have a hunch based on a couple things that I have read about him. Not everybody leaves because they're dying to go be a starter somewhere. I'm thinking Oregon may have offered him far less money than what he was making, since these four star quarterbacks with no playing time are kind of a dime a dozen in the portal these days

I agree with this take. I have read several things that talk about this with numerous teams lately. That the teams are effectively cutting guys they feel they no longer need, aren't a part of their plan or they think have not progressed enough.
Not every player in the portal is looking for bigger paychecks or even just playing time. Some are just looking for another chance. The big names are looking for more money or playing time at P4 schools but a lot of the lesser known guys are looking for a chance to keep playing, chance to start, or have been cut.

That's as bit on the nose, but this take is not too far off base in general. It's easy for some to look back in time in order to criticize certain decisions with the benefit of knowing the future; in reality, Novosad would not have seriously considered Baylor had Baylor brought in another higher end QB, and that is par for the course for high end QBs of that nature.
For the sake of comparison, Lagway almost certainly would not come to Baylor if Baylor signed another top 10 transfer QB prior to him signing. That's how this works.

The negative outcomes of the Novosad recruiting debacle were obvious from the outset. There is no "hindsight" that was being applied then or now and that is an incorrect reframing.
Timeline:
09/28/2021 - Baylor QB Jacob Zeno enters the portal.
12/16/2021 - Novosad Commits to Baylor
03/26/2022 - Novosad takes an "unofficial visit" to Texas A&M
05/08/2022 - Gerry Bohanon leaves Baylor and commits to USF
06/10/2022 - Novosad takes an "official visit" to Ohio State
06/17/2022 - Novosad takes an "official visit" to Baylor
06/25/2022 - Novosad takes a second "unofficial visit" to Texas A&M
07/26/2022 - Novosad takes an "unofficial visit" to Notre Dame
07/29/2022 - Novosad takes a third "unofficial visit" to Texas A&M.
11/30/2022 - Baylor QB Kyron Drones enters the portal.
12/21/2022 - Novosad decommits from Baylor and commits to Baylor.
Baylor's QB room at that time was literally just Blake Shapen. As others mentioned, Dave should get way more heat for that outcome than he does, as with most things related Dave Aranda he gets the kids gloves for some reason.
Dave's decision to not take a QB wasn't a failure in hindsight, it was a failure before it even happened and at the time and was obvious to all observers which is why it get brought up here time and again. Baylor needed a Big 12 level QB to compete and needed QBs to compete on the roster. Instead, we bet our mortgage on a guy that was never truly committed and paid them a pound of flesh by going against our own natures in seeking what is best for the university and the program.
Lagway is exactly the same situation. We need a QB and we need to get the best we can, but you can't plan around someone if he has no plan of being here. Tell him to sign and stop talking or he can piss off and take what you can get elsewhere.
Frankly, if you like Lagway and you want him to succeed, then he should go anywhere else as Dave loves to regress anyone with talent in his programs.

Let's call it what is was. Aranda allowed a 17 year old to tell him how to run his team. The Novosad debacle was a terminable offense and most coaches would have been fired over this.
Anotner painful reminder that coaches shouldn't be be signed to long term extensions after just two seasons on the job.
