It is hard to discuss comparisons of players from different eras (in any sport) to determine who was better. If you dropped a player from the 1980s or before onto a field of players today (and everyone is the same age) the old players would get blown out by just the pure speed of the game, different playing style, new offenses, new defenses, rule differences, etc. Add in the fact most players today are faster, stronger and bigger and it wouldn't even be close. Now if you somehow gave the old players all the same training and background as the new players then it wouldn't even be an even competition. But to think a team or player from 1980 would know how to defend a spread offense they have never seen is just laughable.

I've been a season ticket holder, member of the Bear Foundation, Life Member of the Alumni Association, Life Member of the Letterwinners Association probably longer than 90% of former players. Somehow (because of my 1977, '78, '79 & '80 teammates) I even got named to the Baylor Athletics Hall of Fame. I owe Baylor. I love Baylor. I love my teammates. Every single one of them. I am proud of helping to leave BU in a much better position athletically than when I stepped foot on campus even though it was a time when facilities, support & program was very lean.

5-6 in '77
3-8 in '78 with huge wins over UT & A&M
8-4 in '79 with a Peach Bowl win over Clemson
10-2 in '80 with an unbeaten SWC record and the first 10 win season in Baylor history

I support the team ALL THE TIME and want what's best for Baylor. I just happen to believe we will be left behind in the NIL & Transfer debacles. I am also a realist who has more college & professional football experience than nearly every single poster on Sicem. No big deal though. I cheered the Bears on all through Grant's final years, Reedy, Roberts, Steele (difficult to cheer but I supported and yelled for the players), Morriss, Briles, Grobe, Rhule and yes Aranda. I was offering constructive criticism for a number of the coaches but never got close to any of them. I had no business sucking up to any of them.

Best Baylor team ever is subjective . I've always been most awed by the 2021 team, the 1956 team, 2013 & 2014 teams & 2019 team.

Because I have true skin in the Baylor program I am defensive unlike anything you guys could ever understand. What you guys try to undermine and belittle is in the record books and the list of All-SWC, All-Americans and All-Pro players from that '79 & '80 team can stand up against ANY other Baylor team.

You boys are incapable of understanding and I realize this. That's OK. It's nearly impossible to rank Baylor's best teams ever. One thing is certain, the 1980 team won the conference title outright. They did not have to pull for a conference foe to beat a team to be crowned Champs. They did not share a title with another conference school to be called CO-Champs.

It's all in the record books boys. Still, after 45+ years.

Old players could run just as fast. The human body has limitations and I'd put Gerald "Icecube" McNeil up against any of the young kids. Mike Fisher too.

To think that a Briles/Bennett team, notoriously bad defenses unable to get lined up correctly and taking a dive every few plays could stop our offense? Defenses? 1980 by a million miles. To think that a Briles/Bennett defense could stop a 1980 clock controlling team is the real laughable.

Yes new offenses and defenses. There are things being run today that were never run back then. And yes the rules are different. Helen's to helmet isn't allowed. How many of the old players would get penalties for that. A lot. Same for arms to the head, rules about hitting the QB. Length of season. Blind side blocks being illegal, blocks below the knees, etc.

Lots of the old players would be getting flagged every single play.

Notice no where in my post did I say Briles/Bennet. I simple said players from then versus players today. From any school, any level, even pro.

A 1980s NFL team would struggle against a current NFL team. A 1980s high school team would struggle against a current high school team. A 1980s college team (from any school would struggle against a current college team.

The human body can only change so much and in 50 years it does not overcome superior attitude, coaching, work ethic, etc. If you run a 4.21 vs a 4.22 or 4.23 it makes no difference. I've seen guys that ran a 4.65 get down on kickoff coverage faster than a 4.40 kid.

Why didn't you say Briles/Bennett? They are discussed here more than any other teams. Those teams were the most penalized in Baylor history. Discipline can defeat far superior athletically teams.

i believe guys like butkus, starbach, ted williams, mickey mantle, bill russell, doctor j would be quite interesting in today's games. but at the same time, babe ruth was the greatest player ever - any sport - but only if taken in the context of his time.

bringing it even closer, k-state's michael bishop likely doesn't start this fall. his passing was putrid. likewise, joe belino doesn't win the heisman. but oj simpson starts for aranda this fall.
