lol let's slow down the War Eagle hype train - some serious Dequan Finn vibes here lmao...he might turn out to be the real deal, but I think we've learned the hard way that not all G5 superstars remain superstars in the P4.

Seems like every off season we hear about some new "aha" that Dave has had about a flaw in his approach to leading the team. It's groundhog's day in Waco.

Those beer taps in the background either disqualify him or make him the coach of the future. Now I'm thirsty.

Yep

Baylor Football is Sweet Davey Poo's experiment.

Just keep throwing **** at the wall until it sticks

I was a believer before last year with so many offensive weapons coming back...and then the season happened.

Now I'm a skeptic...not falling for the off-season hype.

'21 was Dave HCing a great roster with good staff - and that worked out to the greatest season in Baylor history*.

I think this year is Dave HCing a good roster with a good staff:
  • I think Spav > Grimes
  • I think Klanderman is a great DC who will be more effective than Dave was as HC/DC (that's a much less common combo than HC/OC for a reason)
  • DJ has a much higher ceiling than Gerry or Blake - in the best case, I think our offense is as productive as the '21 offense.
  • I can't see the '26 defense matching the '21 defense, but I still think they will be a big improvement over last year.
  • We might suck, but there's a decent chance we won't. I don't know if that counts as hype or not lol.
___
*To repeat for the millionth time: Matt Rhule didn't recruit Apu Ika, Jacob Gall, Dillon Doyle, Drew Estrada or Blake Shapen. He also had Pitre overweight and out of position, and Abram Smith on the wrong side of the ball. '21 was not just Dave & Co. lucking into the best season in Baylor history.

At this point, it seems unlikely that these decisions were made by Dave and his staff without direction from the AD (or above), as, if that were honestly the case, Dave would have been fired years ago. Both the slow adoption of NIL and the transition of the focus from high school recruits to transfers just don't seem to decisions that a head coach makes unliterally in the modern era outside of unique situations such as Clemson - where head coach has won multiple national titles, and, until recently, had been a consistent winner for 10+ years.

I had high hopes for the running backs and the defense, but the line could not protect Sawyer and failed to block on the run.

Something happened - maybe an internal bad vibe in the locker room.

Why should be we give money to him?

Like, I mean that in the most sincere way.

I've got no issue with alumni that want to donate to their athletic programs... but I am not someone who would do that.

I would not be interested even if I was a Bama or Ohio State fan. Like if Jerry Jones was asking fans too kick in to help the Dallas Cowboys...who's doing that?

Sawyer's sacks weren't always because the OL immediately blew a block...he could have avoided a handful of them at minimum by taking some available yards or throwing it away way earlier.

Sawyer had ~20% more attempts than the nearest QB in the conference, and yes got sacked 2nd most by raw totals...and that said he still had a better Sack-Per-Attempt % than most of the conference.

Big 12 QBs with at least 200 attempts in 2025, sorted by # of Attempts:
  • 4.4%: 22 / 504 - Sawyer
  • 6.8%: 29 / 428 - Fifita Arizona
  • 4.4%: 18 / 413 - Hoover TCU
  • 4.1%: 16 / 387 - Bachmeier BYU
  • 5.1%: 18 / 356 - Weigman UH
  • 4.7%: 16 / 341 - Johnson KSU
  • 5.3%: 18 / 339 - Becht ISU
  • 2.1%: 7 / 336 - Sorsby UC (He's not super accurate but he is MOBILE)
  • 3.3%: 11 / 334 - Dampier UU (DD was basically 90% Sorsby in most categories, which is still pretty good)
  • 6.3%: 21 / 332 - Morton TTU
  • 5.6%: 18 / 319 - Daniels KU
  • 6.0%: 19 / 315 - Jackson UCF
  • 6.8%: 18 / 266 - Flores OSU
  • 7.5%: 18 / 239 - Leavitt ASU
  • 9.3%: 19 / 204 - Salter CU

And what exactly do they see, beyond mediocre success despite effort?

I just don't see how the defense is any better next year. We hemorrhaged talent. As bad as we were there sure were a bunch of SEC schools glad to snap these guys up. These guys were largely highly rated coming out of high school as well.

Oh, there will be the "Aranda needs at least 3 years with Klandermann" crowd

Kalu was a loss for sure...I'm not convinced Coleman was a huge loss but he might turn out to have been.

And while I have high hopes that Coach Modkins heavily mitigates the loss, it definitely sucked to lose Coach G to USC - the CBs were the most improved unit on the defense last year (low bar, I know).

So all that to say, we might suck.

But I think a great DC who has only that role to focus on is going to be more effective than a guy who's doing DC & HC duties. Further, Klanderman has a history of turning unheralded kids into productive players. So I do think improvement is possible, but I'll be the first to say it's certainly far from guaranteed.

Oh, I think there will be improvement in D this year, mainly due to getting players do what they can do as opposed to what Aranda wants them to do. This will come the outcry for "4 more years" which might not matter since the contract apparently runs thru 2030. Voila! Problem solved.
