Since you're so good at giving directions do you know the way to San Jose?
Been to San Jose. Allow me to recap that "Way to San Jose". It was close to a nightmare.
Fortunately that San Jose trip woke us up to go on and put together an UNDEFEATED SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP.
We had gone through Lubbock like poop through a goose. 11-3. Held them to -38 yards rushing & 102 total yards.
We then drove #20 Houston 24-12. Some fella I know got SWC Player of the Week after 13 tackles, a fumble recovery and blocked a field goal. Who was that guy?
Had a flat the next week versus SMU but still managed to get through Dallas unscathed 32-28.
Drove over to College Station & put 46 points on the Ags while only giving up 7. They scored on our second team.
Went through TCU in Ft. Worth 21-6. TCU had 16 yards rushing.
We were headed to Arkansas and unfortunately ended up in San Jose. 22-30. A blemish but still no conference losses.
After waking up we hopped on the Arkansas road and won 42-15. 116 yards rushing by the Hogs.
The road to Houston meant an unfortunate stop at Rice. Still though after a 16-6 victory the Cubs remained undefeated in conference play!
The road then took us through #20 UT. Baylor became the first private school since the 1949 Rice Owls to win the SWC Championship after we dog-drilled Texas. Texas had 9 first downs, 12 tackles behind the line of scrimmage for 50 yards in losses. The Horns had 35 yards rushing. 138 total yards. That same fella who got SWC Player of the Week versus Houston in Week #4 got Southwest Airlines Player of the game versus UT in Week #11.
I'm sure glad the road led through San Jose! What a wake-up call that turned out to be.
Since Baylor started playing football there have been only 4 Baylor teams that went undefeated in SWC or Big 12 play:
1915 Bears went 3-0 in SWC play
1922 Bears went 5-0 in SWC play
1924 Bears went 4-0-1 in SWC play
The 1980 Bears went 8-0 in SWC play
We yielded an average of 11.7 points per game. We yielded an average of only 9.6 points in conference play.
So was the SWC "down" in all those seasons? Or just in the 1980 season, as you recognized?
Here's the thing, it doesn't matter. The banner is still the banner. You can only beat the teams on your schedule. I never understood the desire for the "best" two teams to play in the playoff. That is a demonstration, not a playoff. Win your league, if the league is down more power to you. Not the teams fault. This eye test stuff is BS.
