BREAKING: Bears add grad-transfer QB Jalan McClendon

March 19, 2018

Baylor has landed a commitment from N.C. State grad-transfer quarterback Jalan McClendon (6-5, 221) who is set to receive his degree from the ACC program in May. McClendon took an official visit to Baylor over the weekend.

The Bears, who had been in search of a grad transfer quarterback since Zach Smith's decision to leave the program was made in December, will add McLendon as their third scholarship quarterback for the 2018 season to compete with sophomore Charlie Brewer and true freshman Gerry Bohanon.

McClendon recently decided to place himself on the grad-transfer market when N.C. State starting quarterback Ryan Finley decided to return for his senior season rather than head to the NFL. McClendon was the backup to current Indianpolis Colts quarterback Jacoby Brissett for the Wolfpack in 2015 while being the back up to Finley in 2016 and 2017.

The large quarterback didn't accumalte eye-popping numbers for the Wolfpack during in his time Raleigh, but did show off plus athleticism in the course of three seasons, rushing 46 times for 223 yards (4.9 yards per carry) and two touchdowns.

McClendon was used often to run the football for the Wolfpack during his sophomore season including key roles in victories over in Notre Dame, Syracuse and North Carolina where he rushed for 129 yards on 21 carries (6.1 yards per carry), including a career high 56 rushing yards against the Fighting Irish. The former 4-star prospect threw for 262 career yards on 55-percent completions with one touchdown and four interceptions.

In one appearance in 2017 as a junior, McClendon completed 2-of-3 passes for 17 yards and rushed for 67 yards on six carries.

So this is the "player to be named later" we got in return for Al Freeman?

Well we sure needed this. Hope he's ready to play, but I also hope we won't need him for extended playing time.

Four star QB coming out of Charlotte in 2014. Offers from FSU, Miami, Tennessee, among others.

Nice to have three quality QBs on the roster.

Do we know if Jersey promised him the starting position like he did Anu? If yes, I wonder how Brewer will feel getting screwed over and if he will handle it with as much class as Zach Smith did.

Any history of concussions or injuries?

That 1 TD pass to 5 picks may be a red flag, though we don't know what produced that. Could have been caused by very limited playing time.

Pretty much a complete unknown but the reality is we weren't going to get a 60%+ completion guy when we have a sophmore established as the starter. Don't know if this is redshirt protection for Bohannon or if the staff just believes you need 3 guys to get through a season.

Anyways, at this stage of the game, we got a guy who had some recruiting pedigree out of high school and hopefully he can perform if he's called upon this fall.

Given our record with QB injuries over the course of at least the last 3 seasons, I'm not sure 3 is even enough - but at least it beats 2 which is where we are presently.

What I hope this means is that they are attempting to redshirt Bohanon.

WTH... he leaves another school because of a Sr. coming back. Here he is behind a Sophomore. How does that make sense?

He sat behind Jacoby Brisset who has started games in the NFL and the guy NC State has now is (google search) projected to be a 4th-6th round pick so it's not like he's playing behind scrubs. No idea how NCST has recruited at QB but maybe the coaches told him if they're going to put another QB in a game for whatever reason, they'll be more inclined to get a younger guy who will be there in 2019 and beyond instead of him. I think this happens quite a bit in college football.

Here he's playing behind a guy who has started 4 games and has a bum shoulder at the moment. Like I said above, he's an unknown but maybe he's coming here because the coaches have told him he's the backup and the plan is to redshirt Bohannon unless he and Charlie both go down. Not an insider so I'm just speculating.

In our current state I don't see how we can afford to redshirt Bohannon even with this new guy.

Hey, State fan here.

Jalan had the unfortunate situation of being behind two NFL caliber QBs and we have another 4-star kid coming in with a monster arm more suited for the system.

Finely Had three years under Our current OC Drink at Boise state and when We hired Him Finley followed.

Jalan is Big, Mobile, but more importantly a class act and a consummate team player who never once complained or pouted. every state fan wanted to see him transfer somewhere he'd have a shot to play because we all believe he's a talented Kid, but the circumstances just didn't work out for him.

I hope he works out as well for you as Al Freeman did for us.

He's here to be a buffer between GB and Brewer so we have a good 2 year gap between them in years. That was the CAB QB model I liked in getting that 2 year difference. I feel like from RG to Florence to Petty to Seth all was exactly 2 years but I could be wrong.

All things considered, I don't think we could have gotten a better QB to transfer to Baylor. Welcome!

McClendon at least gives us a chance to redshirt Bohanon. With him and Heard behind Charlie, we're much more likely to be able to get through a season without burning Bohanon's shirt than we would have been with Heard alone. And he's big and mobile enough that we might be able to utilize him in a special personnel package if circumstances call for it.

As someone posted above, have to wonder how bad Brewer's shoulder is. Wish Smith would have stayed for obvious reasons.

This was very much needed. He will see the field with the way our qbs get hurt.

The staff has been looking for a grad/transfer QB since the season. They've struck out on a few before this. I don't think it's related to Charlie's shoulder recovery per se but of course that doesn't help anything.

If our playbook is so easy that we can give it to a quarterback in June, without the ability to have coaches coach, and expect the quarterback to be able to perform exceptionally and compete when fall camp start, given that they only have three weeks of fall camp before games start, then all quarterbacks before him must be as dumb as a box of rocks and he is a genius..

If all other quarterbacks from last year are not as dumb as a box of rocks and it took them the better part of the spring ball, summer and playing season to learn the playbook, then what hope do we have that this transfer quarterback will be able to perform adequately if put into a game when the game is on the line?

WE ARE DOOMED!!!!!!!!

Bohanon ain't redshirting. He'll be playing by the 5th or 6th game due to injuries.

There's a solution to this problem: get rid of the playbook.

I hear that can work well.
