Without question, coaches are in the position to take responsibility for the players they bring into the fold. That's true of all teachers, counselors, administrators. It's the mission of the organization. It's just more obvious in sports because they spend more than 30 hours a week in the same organization. Overall, Baylor under Briles had some excellent, high class players. The graduation rate bears that out. But Briles has always been a guy that took risks on players. There are times when that paid off, ie Jordan Najvar. Both the player and program benefitted. Problem is, when players aren't making the grade, you have a much riskier scenario. And in the era of social media, the negative impact of their bad behavior multiples 10x. So a coach taking that risk has to react more swiftly. Saying "I didn't know," isn't an acceptable answer. In my mind, "I didn't know," is sufficient grounds for termination. If you can't accept responsibility for player behavior while being paid $6 mil, then you don't need to be on a college campus.ShooterTX said:

I enjoyed the Briles Era immensely. It was a great time to be a Bear. I especially enjoyed watching his teams destroy the blue bloods, and their hopes for a national title.
I think CAB was one of the most brilliant coaches ever, especially on offense. He was able to do more with less talent than almost anyone in the game of football. I doubt that he encouraged or even tolerated rape by his players. I think he was faulted for not being more involved & aware of what his players were doing on their own time. I think Briles believed he was a coach, not a cop or a parent to his players.
Bro, let me tell you straight up, Briles and his assistants knew what his problem players were doing 24x7.ShooterTX said:

A Caber is someone who undermines the present to revise the past as if the self destruction didn't happen, there are a cadre of such revisionists here that delight in the idea of letting the Rhule era fail so they can parade falsehoods about the past, and act as if the self destructed era was the only way and personality who could possibly ever win.ShooterTX said:

I also think Matt Rhule is one excellent HC. He is no where near as talented on offense, but he is amazing at recruiting, developing, and running a program. His strengths seem to be as more of a CEO with excellent HR & management skills, instead of an Xs & Os tactician. In other words, he is the perfect HC to rebuild a program from scratch, after a major scandal.
Am I a "CABer"?

Art Briles is an offensive wizard. He is an innovator in offensive football and excelled at making average/above average players into football champions. Football is a tactical game and his tactics changed the game.
But for any college coach making north of $1 mil, the coach bears the risk if player behavior gets out of hand.

Good post. Briles could of paid someone a half million just to keep him out of trouble. Did not want to.TellMeYouLoveMe said:Bro, let me tell you straight up, Briles and his assistants knew what his problem players were doing 24x7.ShooterTX said:

He hired his son. His son-in-law. The sons of his coaching friends. Any one of his assistants could find out what his players were doing at a moment in time. If you don't know, you call them up and tell them to come to the practice facility ASAP and account for their time.
The ugly truth is that there are some kids that simply can't handle the responsibility of being a college student. If it takes more than a semester to get to make that determination, then there is a leadership problem. Smart managers figure it out in a few weeks.
I think Briles mistakes were preventable, but his unwillingness to cede control/be transparent and the lack of initiative by Ian McCaw were significant contributing factors.
I simply asked what was the difference between BJ Thompson getting three strikes and getting "kicked out" of Baylor and Josh Gordon getting three strikes and kicked out of Baylor? As best I can tell, the answer is that Josh Gordon was an All-American.Wichitabear said:

Okay. Let's hear it. Who are they and what specifically did they do? According to our honorable BOR, there were nineteen players involved. Sadly, the entire 2016 Baylor Football Team wore a big "R" on their backs. I felt bad for those kids. That was the first time I can honestly say that I was ever ashamed to be associated with Baylor. Not because of the players, but because of the people in charge of leading our school.SATXBear said:RD2WINAGNBEAR86 said:I simply asked what was the difference between BJ Thompson getting three strikes and getting "kicked out" of Baylor and Josh Gordon getting three strikes and kicked out of Baylor? You are absolutely correct. The wife and I donated most every year to Baylor and first got season tickets way back in 1996. The last thing we worried about was the behavior of the Baylor Board of Regents. Kinda like our mortgage payment or electricity bill, we just blindly wrote the checks. We figured that our leadership would look out for the best interests of Baylor and they were the very last thing on our minds as far as things to worry about. We blindly wrote checks for over twenty years under five different coaches. We lost for many more years than we won while we were season ticket holders. May 2015 woke us up. My school was annihilated and bludgeoned by the national news media and not single person from Baylor stood up to defend us. Not one. We had no leadership then and we have no leadership now. None of this has anything to do with Matt Rhule. None of this debacle is any of his fault.
Fair enough, Sir!
