Update: On Sunday evening, Baylor announced that senior linebacker Blake Lynch (2), junior running back John Lovett (7) and senior defensive end James Lockhart (9) received the final single digits for the 2019 football season.

Update: On Wednesday, senior receiver Denzel Mims (5) and senior safety Chris Miller (3) were each honored with single digits for the 2019 season. Miller wore the same number in 2018 while Mims wore 15.

On Monday, Matt Rhule announced the first recipients of single digit numbers to players for the 2019 football season. Voted on by the players, those awarded with a single digit represent the nine toughest players who demonstrate leadership on and off of the field.

The five remaining numbers will be released at a later date.

  1. Grayland Arnold
  2. Blake Lynch
  3. Chris MIller
  4. Clay Johnston
  5. Denzel Mims
  6. JaMycal Hasty
  7. John Lovett
  8. Henry Black
  9. James Lockhart

Arnold (4), Hasty (6), Lovett (7) and Black (8) were each awarded single digits in 2018.

Great news!

I look forward to seeing how this translates into results on the field. Maybe Clayton, for example, will be even more of a beast to opposing offenses!

With Brewer it won't matter: he will be so good whatever number he's wearing. He is the leader.

Maybe the top 10 can just wear gold helmets.

Thanks. I thought it was "single digits."

They get voted it and the distinction, but can still keep the number they wish. That number in the 1-9 would just be empty or retired for the season.

I'm pretty sure there are some NCAA rules about numbers for OL, DL, etc. I could be wrong.

OL is the only one to face discrimination

Not wrong. For offense:

Center 50-59
Guard 60-69
Tackle 70-79
End 80-99

But those numbers are not exclusive. We've had kickers & tight ends with numbers on those ranges.

True but the number range provided is specific for o-line. Two players may also share the same number but they may not play during the same down. NCAA makes no stipulation on defensive players.

I think its the other way around. This results from his play on the field and off.

I think the numbers 0 and 00 should be allowed in football.

That would be something.....

Taking a page out of the Pro All star ballots... why not let the season ticket holders vote for a returning player they think earned a single digit over the course of the prior season? A fan favorite so to speak.

I hope that translates into some serious on-the-field production. Also, sounds like the type of guy Rhule could want later as a GA.

That's actually a pretty good idea, at least for one slot.

The bonus would be telling aggies it is a better tradition than the twelfth man on the kickoff team and watch them foam at the mouth.

So far I probably would've only picked 3 of those 6, but I guess that goes to show that there's a lot more that goes on behind the scenes, in the lockerrom and away from the field that is valued by teammates than fans see from limited view of only 5 or 6 games in the stands.

Do people think Brewer is a slacker or something! Dude is one of the hardest working QBs in colleges FB!
