How many of you would pass up a 7-year, $60 million deal?
There were media reports that he was making $8 million a year here.

7 years for $60 million would be $8.5 million a year. I don't think this was about money.

If it wasn't about the money, he would be going to NY
He offered them the chance to match before signing with Carolina according to the Giants fan sites

It sucks that he is leaving....I was hoping somehow he would decide to stay....but as the noise grew louder it certainly began to feel inevitable.

If someone had come to me and said three years ago there is a coach Baylor can hire that will restore the image of the program, lead us to an 11-3 season and a Sugar Bowl appearance, have us in the conversation for the CFP in the final week of the season, and have us ranked in the Top 10 within in 3 years....but then he will leave for the NFL....I would have done that deal in a heartbeat.

This is how I feel.

But I figured he was gone when signing day came (had all the signs of him telling potential recruits that he plans to be at Baylor but will actively been looking for a job in the NFL). And this along with his bowl performance is what is most upsetting. He was halfway out the door by that point and I see it as disrespectful and not doing the job you are currently getting paid for. Other than that I'm very happy with Rhule and wish him the best.

Yep. How about Rae Carruth as OC and Sandusky as DC. PacMan Jones as Recruiting Coordinator.

It's rivals attempting to make BU look bad. They fabricate crap like this then post on on their forums as "evidence" Baylor fans are deplorable.

Can't blame him. A large portion of our fanbase gave him constant **** regardless of how much the team improved. Hilarious that people legitimately believed that NFL teams couldn't compete with Baylor financially. Shows the depth of delusion from our brightest #TruthDontLie scholars.

Also makes sense since Rhule know McGuire is getting a HCing job out of it, so he's setting up others for success. Hopefully we can get a solid OC. That will be the key hire.
Nearly every fan base has a loud unhappy crowd, Rule certainly doesn't think it'll be any different in the NFL. He's not leaving because of a few of the idiots running their mouths here. He wants to compete at the next level, that's what it comes down to.

As for BU competing with the NFL, most of what I read here was that a few (very few) thought that the NFL teams may not think Rhule was worth it, not that they couldn't compete. I thought that they were wrong, but it wasn't as if they were completely delusional. Most saw this coming a mile away by the way he's acted.

Interesting article from Rhule's time at Temple:

https://philadelphia.cbslocal.com/2015/12/03/matt-rhule-future/

"I'd rather coach here and coach Temple's kids then just sell my soul for four million dollars. That is the truth and that's as honest and open as I can be with you guys."

They should have followed up with "What about $8.5 million?"

Same hypocritical rhetoric here, now with this move. Listen to Smoak's radio interview posted on the main page. Listen to key things he says and how it now contradicts so much of what you heard him saying over the past few weeks. I hate that high profile head coaches have to treat this situation of being hired away like this with misleading statements and rah rah's leading up the announcement. It happens with all of them. This just may be Baylor's first experience with it.

Oddly enough he left for $4.5 million last time. He was just negotiating via team meetings both times he left college teams by throwing out numbers to beat.

Are you saying the fan base is a reason for his departure? That's just silly. This whole fan base was behind him this year.
I'm saying it contributed. And, no, the fanbase has not been behind him throughout. Were you not around during year 1? Even year 2 wasn't good enough for fans and support was mediocre early this year. Few people realize how big of a ****show this program was thanks to "Second Chance" Art.

Just look at the posts above you. Or the posts after the first OU loss and the Georgia loss. It's comical. People are quick to call for a coach to get fired, but if one leaves for a BETTER job in the NFL, he's a traitor. Huh?
I never called for Rhule to be fired. Not in Year 1. Not in Year 2. I certainly criticized our offense regressing in Year 3 but that is just honest evaluation.

He did a song and dance with Baylor for 3 years. Clearly, the NFL was always his target. Spent 3 years at Temple. 3 years at Baylor. Viewed us as a stepping stone and nothing else. He doesn't have my respect or animosity. Fine with him leaving if he doesn't want to be here. Especially with what we were paying him.
Maybe you didn't call for him to be fired. I never pinpointed a specific person.

Also, he never got the "top 5" deal you're referencing because he left before it went into effect. His salary was somewhere near the mid-30s. But don't let facts get in the way. They never do on the free board. Only the best and brightest here.

Who were the 5 posters that said Rhule'd never leave because the NFL couldn't compete with Baylor financially? Or the ones that derided me when I said after the OU OT loss that there was a good chance he was gone?

How insane for a football coach to leave one school for a position at another. I'm sure you were outraged -- OUTRAGED -- when Rhule left Temple for Baylor. How dare he! I'm also assuming that you'll only support assistants or inactive coaches for the Baylor job, seeing as how anyone who would leave their school to take the Baylor job is clearly a lying, cowardly weasel. Hell, I still have it against Grant Teaff for bailing on those poor boys at Angelo State so he could eat worms in Waco.

Exactly - no problem with the decision - man should pursue his dreams and what's best for his family financially, big problem with the deception leading up to and then making that decision, while professing to be this massive Man of God. What do you think all these recruits who signed early think of God now, if HE has guys with this kind of ability to be deceptive, being their purported agents?

Backer, Rhule was a church kid. He knew the language the admin/regents/old donors wanted to hear and he could speak it.

You would think most would know by now it is extremely extremely rare, especially in America, for "calling" not to change quickly based on money, prestige, and personal dreams. You might meet one or two in your entire life. I think some are somewhat sincere but always with a bit of their own aspirations and rationalizations mixed in.

Rhule's actions early on showed he was about the nfl. Did he think he could do some good along the way, probably yes. But he was always vying for the nfl. Many here predicted that a few years back. It was obvious.

I think he's probably surprised the Giants weren't as desperate as they thought. I believe he envisioned going to the Giants and it didn't quite fall that way. Now he's called to Carolina.

How can you keep saying this? This has his salary at $4.1M in 2017 (his first year). That is the only data we have available since Baylor is private. That is already good for #26. He received an extension and pay raise a few months back. We have no idea how much it was for. The quoted "$4.1M" you are hearing is simply the only number Baylor has ever disclosed.

I didn't criticize him for leaving. I criticized him for negotiating his new deal in public by telling his current team the amount of money it would take. That's pathetic.

As only the most knowledgable amongst us suspected (well, we knew), his statements on this interview confirm that Matt Rhule and his agent have been talking to Carolina (and New York) and working things out for weeks......not days. Most likely communications started up right as (or slightly before) the Panthers fired Coach Rivera. That's how any hiring/firing process works. The decision that he was leaving was also most likely made by Rhule (and family) and communicated to Rhoades well before the Sugar Bowl. All of the coaching rhetoric leading up the bowl game from everyone was - well - just that, rhetoric. Its a shame the process goes this way, but its extremely common intended to protect the players and try not to truly distract from the game.
