BREAKING: Baylor to hire former UNC HC Larry Fedora as offensive coordinator

January 25, 2020

Baylor head coach Dave Aranda is in the process of hiring former University of North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora as his offensive coordinator, SicEm365 has learned from multiple sources. Pete Thamel was the first to make the report public.

Baylor has not confirmed the report at this time.

The news comes a day after Baylor officially announced Jorge Munoz of LSU as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.

Fedora was the head coach of the Tar Heels for seven seasons from 2012-2018 and compiled an overall record of 45-43 including an even 28-28 in league play. From 2012-2016 Fedora led UNC to a 40-25 record, but won only five games in his final two seasons there in 2017 and 2018.

Fedora spent the 2019 season as an analyst for the University of Texas while receiving his buyout from UNC.

Prior to North Carolina, Fedora spent four seasons as the head coach at Southern Miss where he amassed a 34-19 overall record and a 20-12 record in Conference USA from 2008-2011.  From 2005-2007 Fedora was the offensive coordinator for Oklahoma State under Mike Gundy and from 2002-2004 he spent time on staff at Florida, including as the offensive coordinator in 2004.

Fedora won the C-USA Championship in 2011 with Southern Miss and reached the ACC Championship game in 2015 with UNC.

Known for his powerful offenses, Fedora’s teams averaged north of 30 points in nine of his 11 seasons as a head coach. As an offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, the Cowboys improved from 20.2 points in his first season to 35.2 and 34.6 points in years two and three.

Fedora spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Baylor from 1991-1996, including time coaching the receivers, tight ends and running backs. Fedora spent two years under head coach Grant Teaff from 1991-1992.

Trust the process.
It's all coming together.

Grab a couple JC transfers and we will have a decent season.
Then next year when we add six or eight 5 star recruits, we are going hunting for some Sooner skins.

Does anyone think for his #Newprofilepic Twitter post Fedora is just gonna pull out one of his old BU pics of him coaching with Teaff? Haha.

I like getting former HC's as coordinators, they seem to do well in that role.

We shall see if Fedora continues that trend here.

I think it can also be helpful to Aranda as a first time HC to have someone on staff who has done it.

Fedora did have some success at UNC and probably also learned some things not to do that he can pass on to Aranda.

My understanding is Fedora really wants to be a HC again so I would expect him to be highly motivated to be successful in this role.

I think the new DC also has quite a bit of head coaching experience. Lots of advice available if needed.

Nice hire, but at this point I'm a little more excited about defense.

My understand is that Coach Fedora is very active in FCA. He coached for two legends that love the Lord including Grant Teaff and Fisher DeBerry. This is an exciting hire on a number of levels.

Perhaps the Bohanon and Zeno era will begin too.
A fresh new offense.

I noticed the news report did not mention the one game they played against Baylor in 2015: the RAB in which we torched them for 645 rushing yards--a bowl record--and won the game 49-38. Oh yes, we also did it running the "wild bear" offense with 5 different players taking snaps.

Here's a nice abbreviated version:

We had a very fine offensive line.

And I liked our black-green-black unis

I'm excited about both.

I think a Fedora/Munoz offense is going to be an upgrade over the up and down Nixon/Thomas offense

He will boost our recruiting and he has head coaching experience at a Power Five. We will be fine. Wait until he gets to recruit with our facilities.

With this staff you can tell Baylor is opening the pocket book. Rhoades said he wants to play for national championships.
You think the multi multi million dollar buyout on CMR's contract helped!

Great hire, he was who the Texas folks wanted Herman to name OC as this past season ended. Herman may have done it had Fedora made himself a candidate rather than pursue a Hc job.

Fedora will likely get another HC shot after a season or 2 as OC here. He probably will not be here for long realistically due that understandably. But this is a great hire here.
Understood and I agree. I'm just hoping for once we can keep the entire staff together for several years. Nothing hurts progress like constant turnover in your staff unless you're Nick Saban. Consistency wins and shuffleboard loses.

That's is one of Herman's and Sumlin's and Strong's problems. Constant staff turnover.

If Orgeron can win after losing Burrow and his staff being demolished I'll tip my hat to a guy who I never thought was that great of an X and O coach. Great recruiter.

Fedora is going to walk on campus today or has and is probably thinking this isn't even the same place where he was an assistant under Reedy.

What if someone had told us right after the RAB that in 4 years Fedora would be the BU OC and Briles would be coaching at Mt. Pleasant...

Love the optimism here but since there are generally 40-60 5* kids in the country every year, I'm thinking you're shooting a buy high here. I'd be more than happy with 1......just to break the ice for future classes.

I like that we hired a DC that made major strides improving points allowed by his defense.
Same thing with the OC, who has a track record of improving points scored.

Now... what are we going to do with all those tight ends? LOL

Haven't seen a recent update. Where do we stand with Trooper Taylor? Has that ship sailed, or is he a secret until after NSD?

Aranda is assembling the best or one of the best over all staffs that a Baylor HC has ever had. This staff appears to be better than both Briles' and Rhule's staff across the board.

I know some day there will be a 30 for 30 or a stand alone doc and it will be fascinating to see how it comes out.

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer here, but let's all remember that Fedora wants (and has been) a HC role. There's no guarantee that he's here for very long at all, if even more than 1 season if the offense explodes next year.

Very real.

That's a good point BBY2K. But let's see how this season goes first..... There are still offensive question marks that need to be answered over the next couple of seasons, IMO, to have a (sustainable) offensive set (like OL!).

But - so far - this coaching staff build is exciting and on the surface its actually looking like it could be better than the recently departed staff. Or any staff in quite a long time. IMO

I would be ecstatic if he was so successful at Baylor that he decided to get a promotion.

If we are now defining our success as getting in the CFP conversation....than I would think any OC we bring in that could get us there would quickly become a hot commodity to be a HC somewhere.

Coach Aranda is putting pride aside and going for the guys who will make him and his team better. True mark of a Leader. Even if this staff is only together for 1 or 2 years the things he will learn, the homeruns and the strikeouts, will make him a better coach in the long run. I dont know all of BUs history but I know since I've been paying attention from Steele on this is the most exciting mix of experience and experiment I've witnessed.
