BREAKING: Baylor to hire former UNC HC Larry Fedora as offensive coordinator

Baylor head coach Dave Aranda is in the process of hiring former University of North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora as his offensive coordinator, SicEm365 has learned from multiple sources. Pete Thamel was the first to make the report public.

Baylor has not confirmed the report at this time.

The news comes a day after Baylor officially announced Jorge Munoz of LSU as the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.

Fedora was the head coach of the Tar Heels for seven seasons from 2012-2018 and compiled an overall record of 45-43 including an even 28-28 in league play. From 2012-2016 Fedora led UNC to a 40-25 record, but won only five games in his final two seasons there in 2017 and 2018.

Fedora spent the 2019 season as an analyst for the University of Texas while receiving his buyout from UNC.

Prior to North Carolina, Fedora spent four seasons as the head coach at Southern Miss where he amassed a 34-19 overall record and a 20-12 record in Conference USA from 2008-2011.  From 2005-2007 Fedora was the offensive coordinator for Oklahoma State under Mike Gundy and from 2002-2004 he spent time on staff at Florida, including as the offensive coordinator in 2004.

Fedora won the C-USA Championship in 2011 with Southern Miss and reached the ACC Championship game in 2015 with UNC.

Known for his powerful offenses, Fedora’s teams averaged north of 30 points in nine of his 11 seasons as a head coach. As an offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State, the Cowboys improved from 20.2 points in his first season to 35.2 and 34.6 points in years two and three.

Fedora spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Baylor from 1991-1996, including time coaching the receivers, tight ends and running backs. Fedora spent two years under head coach Grant Teaff from 1991-1992.

Everyone needs to tap the brakes..there will be a bumpy transition on offense with players recruited to one style of offense now learning brand new terminology and schemes.

Im not expecting 2017 type adjustments but there will be some.

I am not sure what you're talking about. I have not seen people here talking about winning the conference or anything like that next year.

Most of the predictions I've seen people making over the last few days have us around 6-6 or 7-5 next year with a ceiling of 8 wins.

I think the excitement here is about the trajectory for the future....not strictly next season.

Not trying to be a Debbie Downer here, but let's all remember that Fedora wants (and has been) a HC role. There's no guarantee that he's here for very long at all, if even more than 1 season if the offense explodes next year.

Very real.
Which is why signing Jorge was so important. Many thought he was replacing Brady at LSU. I imagine he has his own sights set on something higher than WR coach.

I trust CDA.

The Bears just need to win two games to be better than 2017. I think this coaching staff will make everyone forget all about Little Matty by year three.

This is a possibility.

Now coach Aranda being very cerebral, he could very well have this in his total plan.
He hires Fedora to implement a offense with the assistance of Munoz. In addition he has Fedora to mentor him as a head coach. And if Fedora leaves next year or the year after, Munoz gets promoted to OC.

All you people looking for lifetime marriages in coaching apparently don't know anything about how this coaching thing works.

It's employment, not a marriage.

Hopefully, spouses do not view their marriages as employment, but that's another issue entirely.

My understand is that Coach Fedora is very active in FCA. He coached for two legends that love the Lord including Grant Teaff and Fisher DeBerry. This is an exciting hire on a number of levels.
Were Manziel, Mahomes, and Burrow members? Tua might have been. My point is you don't find these guys in church. With that being said I could never understand why we couldn't snag a Tebow or two.

The reasons you chose Baylor for an education and the reasons a four or five star chose a university are miles apart.

Fedora replaced Butch Davis at UNC. He inherited a completely pro-style offense. Very vanilla, fairly low scoring, with a QB (Bryn Renner) that was a very limited runner. Renner threw for 28 TDs against 7 INTs. UNC finished 8th in the nation in scoring at 40 PPG.

That was his FIRST season at UNC, with none of "his guys" in place.

As to whether Fedora will run his usual HUNH, I doubt very much it will be hurry up. First, that isn't Aranda's background at all. LSU didn't run it this year. Second, none of the top teams run offense at breakneck speed any more. It kills the defense. Third, Fedora's offenses at UNC slowed down as his time passed. Part of that was his lack of talent at QB in his last two seasons. But I think he also realized his D was getting worn out by being on the field so much.

One last point. Some are claiming he didn't fail at UNC. He absolutely did, although his failure was magnified by a ridiculous amount of injuries. But he won only 5 games in his last two seasons. He didn't recruit well on defense, and had a key whiff with his QBs. Having said that, he isn't our head coach. Which is why I love the hire

That's a fair analysis. At first, I wasn't quite sure if I liked the hire. But like some on this board have posted, the offensive approach may be different. Great football mind. Time will tell. I'm hoping that this a newly constructed offense by him and the excellent minds we have in the coaching staff. I honestly feel like this is what Rhule was trying to do except with less talent and experience on offense. We now have experience and innovators that can create an new multiple attack with an experienced play caller who will know when to call the right plays at the right time. I'm interested to hear some interviews to see if this is the case. If so, I'm started to get excited.
