Expecting to win next season is called riding the Aranda train.
Aranda expects to win. That's why he upgraded our offensive staff after Year 1.PartyBear said:

I think it was partially because of death threats and partly because he has graduated and still wants a challenge in a different environment.boognish_bear said:Thee University said:Years ago (back right after leather helmets) this might mean a few things:boognish_bear said:Thee University said:More than anything...........I have to believe that if either one of them was even close to Charlie's talents they would have been used much more often. Something was wrong somewhere and I'm not going to say anymore about it. It is almost as if we don't have a QB going into spring. If I was a QB considering the portal Baylor would be at the top of my list.boognish_bear said:Thee University said:
He will be our head coach when some blueblood school snatches Aranda away.
In the meantime we need to tap into some transfer meat and have a great spring.
Needs:
#1. QB - neither one of our boys on campus have really shown they are the solution.
#2. OL - Need the big uglies like A&M has.
#3. DL - Already picked up Siaki "Apu" Ika. Need a few more SEC type DL or a few BYU Polynesian or Samoan DTs
What have you seen from Zeno that makes you think he won't be a good quarterback? In the very small sample size we have seen seems like he has done pretty well considering he's been forced into games where he didn't spend the week before taking the majority of the snaps with the starters.
That's the part that makes me wonder....the fact neither of them saw playing time this year despite our struggles to get things going on offense. To my untrained eye it looks like Zeno has good zip on his passes and can push the ball downfield to present at least the hint of a vertical threat.
But the fact that our coaches see the QB group in practice every day and didn't give one of them at least a few series....that's a little disconcerting.
1. QB can't remember plays well enough. No brainer.
2. QB can't read defenses and throws into coverage too often.
3. QB has a bad attitude or does not give 100% in practice and it poisons the team.
4. Rest of team (not only the coaches) don't react positively when one or both of them are in the game. Not a real team leader.
These are just 4 wild @$$ guesses on my part. What do I know about QBs?
If any of these issues are at play and CB was still going to be our best option next year I wonder why he would leave?

Also (and this cannot be understated), he does not have to pretend to be Mormon. Now, he has to abstain from drinking and say he's Baptist! LOL

The death threats were debunked. Apparently, Charlie's sister overreacted to some criticism--per Charlie.Thee University said:I think it was partially because of death threats and partly because he has graduated and still wants a challenge in a different environment.boognish_bear said:

That explains a lot. I always wondered why he would choose Utah instead of some place closer to home (assuming there is a QB opening in Texas or nearby).Franklins said:
Utah was 3rd in the Pac in sacks allowed (7 total) despite a young offensive line, and I believe they have everyone coming back.

Just because his brother was willing to play football a thousand miles away does not necessarily mean Charlie would but it would appear that that was not a factor. I just know it often is for college kids. It was for me, even as an adult.

$1,000,000 per year contract and move into a P5 program. Next question.BearlyBeloved said:
WHY is Jeff Grimes leaving a solid position as OC at BYU?
Some will say it's a lateral move, but I disagree.
Key factors probably are:
- Money
- Return to roots in Texas
- Money
- Big 12 instead of independent
- Money
- Bigger recruiting base at Baylor than BYU
- Money
- Advancement potential (Head coach at BYU is required to be Mormon--which Grimes is not--but other coaches don't have to be)
- Money
- Relationship with Aranda
- Money
- Access to Gut-Paks and other Texas BBQ

At the beginning of this decade, we had Kevin Steele and Guy Morriss. Hardly prolific offenses. Be careful of what you are asking for.

That was 2 decades ago. And they are both completely different hires and coaches.jumpinjoe said:
