Expecting to win next season is called riding the Aranda train.

Aranda expects to win. That's why he upgraded our offensive staff after Year 1.

I agree with Aranda we should have a great season and we should not expect less than that.

He will be our head coach when some blueblood school snatches Aranda away.

In the meantime we need to tap into some transfer meat and have a great spring.

Needs:

#1. QB - neither one of our boys on campus have really shown they are the solution.

#2. OL - Need the big uglies like A&M has.

#3. DL - Already picked up Siaki "Apu" Ika. Need a few more SEC type DL or a few BYU Polynesian or Samoan DTs

What have you seen from Zeno that makes you think he won't be a good quarterback? In the very small sample size we have seen seems like he has done pretty well considering he's been forced into games where he didn't spend the week before taking the majority of the snaps with the starters.
More than anything...........I have to believe that if either one of them was even close to Charlie's talents they would have been used much more often. Something was wrong somewhere and I'm not going to say anymore about it. It is almost as if we don't have a QB going into spring. If I was a QB considering the portal Baylor would be at the top of my list.

That's the part that makes me wonder....the fact neither of them saw playing time this year despite our struggles to get things going on offense. To my untrained eye it looks like Zeno has good zip on his passes and can push the ball downfield to present at least the hint of a vertical threat.

But the fact that our coaches see the QB group in practice every day and didn't give one of them at least a few series....that's a little disconcerting.
Years ago (back right after leather helmets) this might mean a few things:

1. QB can't remember plays well enough. No brainer.
2. QB can't read defenses and throws into coverage too often.
3. QB has a bad attitude or does not give 100% in practice and it poisons the team.
4. Rest of team (not only the coaches) don't react positively when one or both of them are in the game. Not a real team leader.

These are just 4 wild @$$ guesses on my part. What do I know about QBs?

If any of these issues are at play and CB was still going to be our best option next year I wonder why he would leave?
I think it was partially because of death threats and partly because he has graduated and still wants a challenge in a different environment.

Wait.. You have to abstain from alcohol in order to be Baptist?

I thought you just had to lie!
You just have to not recognize all the other Baptists at the liquor store.

What's the difference between Baptists and Catholics?

Catholics say hi to each other at the liquor store.

The death threats were debunked. Apparently, Charlie's sister overreacted to some criticism--per Charlie.

I'm sure that getting so beat up here is no small factor.

We allowed 31 sacks this year, only ahead of Kansas. Last place in conference the previous 3 years (38, 39, 38). You can definitely put some of the blame on Charlie and the way he plays, but he has certainly not been playing behind the '93 Cowboys O-line.

Utah was 3rd in the Pac in sacks allowed (7 total) despite a young offensive line, and I believe they have everyone coming back.

That explains a lot. I always wondered why he would choose Utah instead of some place closer to home (assuming there is a QB opening in Texas or nearby).

If Randa and Rhoades had not flushed out the 2020 version of CB, and the O staff , 2021 would have sucked pond water. Thank goodness for 2020 and the 2-7 record. It paved the way for the true success we hope for now.

I don't think playing close to home is particularly important to the Brewers. His brother Michael finished his career at Va. Tech, so there's precedent there.

Just because his brother was willing to play football a thousand miles away does not necessarily mean Charlie would but it would appear that that was not a factor. I just know it often is for college kids. It was for me, even as an adult.

I'm not saying that Michael's actions determine Charlie's. But Charlie grew up watching his brother, with whom he's close apparently, leave Texas for Virginia and saw firsthand the benefits that decision had on his career.

And honestly, both Michael and Charlie Brewer have always struck me as guys who just want to play football. Their top priority is getting the opportunity to play and showcase their talents. The where is secondary.

I think you are probably correct.

The real problem for us fans is trying to decipher what is going on in players' heads when they don't talk too much. Charlie has a reserved personality anyway but we rarely get much info. That's as it should be because they are still kids and deserve their privacy.

WHY is Jeff Grimes leaving a solid position as OC at BYU?

Some will say it's a lateral move, but I disagree.

Key factors probably are:

  • Money
  • Return to roots in Texas
  • Money
  • Big 12 instead of independent
  • Money
  • Bigger recruiting base at Baylor than BYU
  • Money
  • Advancement potential (Head coach at BYU is required to be Mormon--which Grimes is not--but other coaches don't have to be)
  • Money
  • Relationship with Aranda
  • Money
  • Access to Gut-Paks and other Texas BBQ

$1,000,000 per year contract and move into a P5 program. Next question.

(Grimes is the second 7-figure per year assistant coach in Baylor's athletic history. Fedora was the first.)

If we can have an offense similar to what we had at the beginning of the decade--while Aranda gives us a defense like recent years under Rhule--then he will be worth the price. Top notch O & D will go a long way towards winning another Big 12 title. I just hope they work on Special Teams too. That's one thing that was great about Rhule and we always enjoyed those blocked kicks or other great plays, especially when they led to TD's! I'm thinking of the ST TD in the 2018 homecoming game vs OSU & the 2 kick returns last year vs Kansas.

At the beginning of this decade, we had Kevin Steele and Guy Morriss. Hardly prolific offenses. Be careful of what you are asking for.

A prolific offense starts and ends with a high-caliber QB - period. We should all simply be hoping at this point that Baylor's QB "next ups" live up to their billing.

When I (or anyone) talks about Baylor's prolific offense in the past decade, everyone understands it to mean Briles. Besides Briles came to Baylor at the end of the previous decade (2000s).

That was 2 decades ago. And they are both completely different hires and coaches.

Since there's still almost a month until Signing Day, our new staff has time to make an impact on our 2021 class. Maybe Grimes and Pugh can bring in some last minute OL studs.

Grimes simply wanted to remove the "Y" in BYU.
