He'll get 1 more year, but I won't be surprised to see him take a spot in the booth as an analyst at ESPN for college or Fox or CBS for pro football and that will be his career heading forward. ESPN execs and others in the industry raved at his performance on the Coaches Show simulcast of the National Championship game the year we hired him. Most guys in the industry have said that's where he'll end up long term. He can move wherever he wants and raise his family with some level of permanency as his kids grow up. He is a natural born speaker (some of you would say salesman), so it will be a good fit for him.

He's not done coaching..he's too young..even if he gets canned hell land a good college job..

He's not that much older than Aranda. 46 to 43 years old.

Owner David Tepper has already said they're gonna try and turn it around. But if he gets off to a slow start next year's all bets are off. Maybe the next college coach hiring cycle he'll jump in (UCLA?)

If Deshaun Watsons legal issues clear up that's an obvious move to make for an instant turnaround.

There is nothing inherently wrong with being a salesman or using audiences to persuade and communicate.

It's the part where you ask others for a commitment under the premise that you're making a commitment too.
He didn't burn me so I'm not out anything, but he didn't stay long enough to deserve respect either.

Matt didn't sound very convinced at the post game press conference today.

Carolina is a complete mess. He should leave.

Should Ron Rivera leave Washington? What I saw on display from them tonight was borderline criminal.

Rhule is right on schedule. He's still in the "learning how to lose"phase of the process.

What karma? For taking more money and going to an nfl team?

Baylor is a better team than Carolina.

If the Panthers' GM doesn't get CMR a QB and quick trying to turn these wash outs and has beens into superstars, Rhule won't last through next season.

The difference is Kevin Steele never actually had any success as a head coach, so he had no frame of reference.

I don't think Rhule will succeed in Carolina without significantly better QB play, and he'll be on a short leash next year. But unlike Steele, he knows what a good team and healthy organization looks like and has a better idea of how far he is from that guide post. If they could find a real quarterback, they could take a big step next year. But that's a big if and Rhule is running out of time there.

It's looking like Christian McCaffrey is going to be an injury prone player. Not having him able to play reliably the last 2 years has been a killer too.

When he's healthy that guy can be a game changer.

That he bet on McCaffrey was just mistake one,

Great athlete, just perpetual injuries.

But it's not one he's unfamiliar with. He worked with Coughlin in New York.

Rhule has the same problem that most bad teams/unsuccessful coaches in the NFL have. He doesn't have a competent quarterback. He knows football. But you can't win in the NFL without a good quarterback, and a bad one can make an otherwise solid team look a lot worse than it actually is.

Not true..he had never missed a practice much less a game till last year Rhules first season.

That contract was given to him the year before.

I have to wonder if Tepper or others are meddling behind the scenes. Matt didn't have that issue at BU. Also have to wonder if he "regerts" the move on several levels.

That and pro athletes do not buy in like college. You also don't have time on your side in the nfl.

It felt like bringing Cam back was forced on Rhule….but I don't know for sure

I agree with your second sentence, for sure. But I think Rhule's approach with his players is one that translates pretty well to the pros. He's not a big rah-rah guy. He's a process guy, which is similar to what you see from a lot of successful NFL coaches.

I don't think buy-in or effort are major issues. The Panthers just have a terrible offense that undermines some of the strengths that team has in other phases.

I live in Charlotte, so I have a pretty good view on the sentiment towards him here. Rhule is who he is, and the constant waffling with the QB position (similar to what he did at Baylor with Zach Smith/Jalen McClendon/Charlie Brewer) is wearing thin.

If he had just stuck with one QB, even if it was a subpar one, people would recognize that the position is a weakness. But his constant benching of a guy every time he makes a mistake is driving the fanbase here nuts and the fact he's done it with a local legend in Cam Newton has further divided the fans.

Unless he completely loses the locker room, he'll get another year here, but he better figure it out, and quick. The fact that he refuses to hire experienced NFL assistants hasn't played too well, either.

Having followed his career since Temple, I don't think Rhule really worries much about what fans think. I think he has supreme confidence in himself and his process and knows fans will come back around as soon as he starts winning.

Fans everywhere he has been have thought he was an idiot in the early years of his tenure. And then they come to find out later there was a method to the madness.

This may be the first time in his career where the results never come, though. He's already living on borrowed time and still doesn't have a quarterback on his roster worth half a damn. It's going to be hard to win next year with a journeyman spare or rookie draft pick calling the signals.

Not sure. His 3rd year at Baylor was great, but we played **** teams. He didn't beat one ranked team while at BU and struggled against many average one's.

Our strength of schedule was 45th in 2019 and is 53rd currently (it will improve some after the bowl game). Our schedule in this conference is pretty much the same every year.

One would have to think he discussed "the process" with the owner prior to his hire. If the process is not on schedule, he wont be around long. It has to be hard for the fans seeing them seemingly get worse as the season moves on.

yep. We struggled most games, got very lucky on several of them. Rhule is a good college coach but not great. Unproven to say the least.

According to The Athletic's Joseph Person, Panthers owner David Tepper feels a lot of regret about giving head coach Matt Rhule a massive contract when he was hired in 2020.

Rhule was hired in Carolina in 2020 after overseeing quick turnarounds at Temple and Baylor, but sources say owner David Tepper is unhappy and embarrassed after the $16 billion hedge fund manager gave Rhule a seven-year, $62 million deal to outbid the New York Giants for his services.

It probably stings even a little more after he made that offer Rhule went back to the Giants to see if they would beat the deal.
