A "Fire Rhule" chant has broken out at BoA Stadium.

Matt Rhule seemed like a coach campaigning to keep his job. Apologized to the fans that the results haven’t been there, but believes process is “1,000% working.”

Matt Rhule says Panthers are chasing where the Bucs are. Glad to see no one quit. “I’m not going to apologize that we’re not there yet.”

What karma? For taking more money and going to an nfl team?
Oh no. https://t.co/03hPfmhG9J

The difference is Kevin Steele never actually had any success as a head coach, so he had no frame of reference.Ghostrider said:

I don't think Rhule will succeed in Carolina without significantly better QB play, and he'll be on a short leash next year. But unlike Steele, he knows what a good team and healthy organization looks like and has a better idea of how far he is from that guide post. If they could find a real quarterback, they could take a big step next year. But that's a big if and Rhule is running out of time there.
But it's not one he's unfamiliar with. He worked with Coughlin in New York.Ghostrider said:bear2be2 said:The difference is Kevin Steele never actually had any success as a head coach, so he had no frame of reference.Ghostrider said:

Rhule has the same problem that most bad teams/unsuccessful coaches in the NFL have. He doesn't have a competent quarterback. He knows football. But you can't win in the NFL without a good quarterback, and a bad one can make an otherwise solid team look a lot worse than it actually is.

I have to wonder if Tepper or others are meddling behind the scenes. Matt didn't have that issue at BU. Also have to wonder if he "regerts" the move on several levels.
I agree with your second sentence, for sure. But I think Rhule's approach with his players is one that translates pretty well to the pros. He's not a big rah-rah guy. He's a process guy, which is similar to what you see from a lot of successful NFL coaches.Ghostrider said:bear2be2 said:But it's not one he's unfamiliar with. That and pro athletes do not buy in like college. You also don't have time on your side in the nfl.
Having followed his career since Temple, I don't think Rhule really worries much about what fans think. I think he has supreme confidence in himself and his process and knows fans will come back around as soon as he starts winning.Mitch Henessey said:
I live in Charlotte, so I have a pretty good view on the sentiment towards him here. Rhule is who he is, and the constant waffling with the QB position (similar to what he did at Baylor with Zach Smith/Jalen McClendon/Charlie Brewer) is wearing thin.
If he had just stuck with one QB, even if it was a subpar one, people would recognize that the position is a weakness. But his constant benching of a guy every time he makes a mistake is driving the fanbase here nuts and the fact he's done it with a local legend in Cam Newton has further divided the fans.
Unless he completely loses the locker room, he'll get another year here, but he better figure it out, and quick. The fact that he refuses to hire experienced NFL assistants hasn't played too well, either.

Fans everywhere he has been have thought he was an idiot in the early years of his tenure. And then they come to find out later there was a method to the madness.
This may be the first time in his career where the results never come, though. He's already living on borrowed time and still doesn't have a quarterback on his roster worth half a damn. It's going to be hard to win next year with a journeyman spare or rookie draft pick calling the signals.
Our strength of schedule was 45th in 2019 and is 53rd currently (it will improve some after the bowl game). Our schedule in this conference is pretty much the same every year.Ghostrider said:bear2be2 said:Having followed his career since Temple, I don't think Rhule really worries much about what fans think. Not sure. His 3rd year at Baylor was great, but we played **** teams. He didn't beat one ranked team while at BU and struggled against many average one's.
yep. We struggled most games, got very lucky on several of them. Rhule is a good college coach but not great. According to The Athletic's Joseph Person, Panthers owner David Tepper feels a lot of regret about giving head coach Matt Rhule a massive contract when he was hired in 2020.
Rhule was hired in Carolina in 2020 after overseeing quick turnarounds at Temple and Baylor, but sources say owner David Tepper is unhappy and embarrassed after the $16 billion hedge fund manager gave Rhule a seven-year, $62 million deal to outbid the New York Giants for his services.
I asked Matt Rhule about the Athletic article. He said that he doesn't respond to anonymous sources and that there is no tension in the #Panthers locker room. pic.twitter.com/Kalsj7NxqW
