My hyper-competitive 8yo daughter is looking for a select team to join in Waco. She recently tried out for a 8U coach pitch Buzz team and didn't make the cut although she was a solid player during tryouts and the coach indicated she did well and he wanted to stay in touch in case of attrition. There were 35 players for 15 spots and I didn't disagree with her not making the cut but she had to be close.

For the last few years she's been playing Midway LL in the fall and Lorena LL in the spring. We've been able to funnel her into some teams that we knew would be solidly coached/competitive prior to this year but her Lorena LL team this year barely qualifies as a team. (Neither her coach or assistant coach have ever played the game and they had a whopping 3 practices - two hitting, one fielding - before the season started and none since. There is literally no coaching going on - because no one knows what to do - and every girl on the team has regressed over the year compared to the mean.) Yall know the type - the coach who just drafts her girlfriend's kids on the team so they can "have fun together" and end up losing every game 15-0.

I'm done with her playing LL after this year (mostly because she hates it since she's the only one that gives a damn) and have been making calls about continuing lessons at D-Bat, etc, While that will help, she wants reps with a team and to play games.

I agree she's not quite Buzz level but didn't know if there were teams yall were aware of that might not quite be that level but still compete and have solid coaching. I know Diamond Athletics does this for younger boys baseball but girls softball is not offered there to my knowledge.

Thanks.

I'm a HS softball umpire. I've also called out in Lorena LL for 12 years or so. I coached my daughter and sons for many seasons there.

Check with the Hooks organization. They might have an 8U team. They have a good number Lorena kids that play with them. Good parents that are well-intentioned.

You could also try the Waco Heat. They run a solid program at that level. These girls mostly feed into the Lake Air LL system. They won the LLWS a few years back off the backs of the Heat program. I've seen their 8U girls in the outfield catch pop flies that lower-level HS right-fielders miss.

I'm sure you're quite busy, but have you thought about helping the "coaches" of her team? Maybe you could team up with one of the other parents with a girl on that team that has talent. It's amazing what a little fundamental work can do for players and their attitude. 8U is all about hitting. Within a week, you could have every kid on that team making contact. Basic stuff: Knob-drill, hitting stick, lots of tee work, soft toss, practice-golf ball soft toss, etc.

If you got truly motivated, you could approach Trey with the Buzz and discuss starting your own Buzz team. It sounds like you'd have 19 other girls to pull from.

Thanks Coke Bear. Trey is who we tried out with. Really impressed how he runs practices. I think my daughter is a step behind Buzz and while the thought of running a team is exciting, I really don't have the time. It's a big commitment and my other daughter plays multiple select sports already with lots of travel.

I've heard of Hooks and had a friend whose daughter played there. Might be a great option.

One of our other friends plays Waco Heat. I think they are loaded at the 8U position but my understanding is that the fall sometimes changes things so will stay connected.

Again, I'd love to coach the LL team but I just can't make the time commitment that I feel would be fair for the kids and families. I respect people that do that because it's a thankless job but it's been a frustrating season with a bunch of parents that don't want to practice and a coach who doesn't really coach or push. Basic fundamentals and reps would have gotten these kids a lot farther in a short time. But I digress.

Will def give Hooks a look and stay in touch with others...

I'm getting in touch with Jeff Kroll. Hoping that could open some options for the fall.

Waco Warriers is great. Know several parents with kiddos on that team. I need a coach pitch team for this upcoming year and I think their current, youngest 8U team is moving onto kid pitch. My daughter is not quite that level.

Just as a point of comparison my daughter played baseball exclusively until this year now that she's 10. She currently plays house baseball and quit travel baseball to play travel softball. The competitiveness/talent in travel softball isn't nearly as high, but she's having a blast. The softball vibe is just different than baseball. This is her last season of baseball I can tell. It certainly helped her for softball as most girls (around Northern Virginia at least) at 10 just don't have instincts for the game. Other similar softball parents told me to expect the same and they were right. I didn't expect her to switch until the boys really stared to get bigger and stronger.
