Does anyone remember having an adopted Big Brother/Big Sister program at Baylor? I experienced the Health Camp for the first time not long after Welcome Week, when my Baylor Big Brother took me there for dinner.

My dad, '63 grad, said he used to study at the Elite Cafe. He also used to bowl at Lake Air and the Lake Air burgers were his usual dinner.

I had a Big Sis and she took me to Health Camp. Great memories.

Her boyfriend was hired by the Partner at Arthur Anderson who was passed out in the back window of the Cadillac in Fandango.

Carol also introduced me to Fandango.

Love Fandango! What a reference! The movie was about a group of Texas students, but I believe the story should have started at Baylor. I could be wrong, but I thought Herb's son, Kevin, directed it.

During Baylor graduate school, I went skydiving in Temple, and I kept thinking, "Arch!" during training. We practiced in a hangar very much like the one in the film.

It was very much about Baylor students. Kevin Reynolds directed and it was semi-autobiographical. The mom and dad that show up at the frat party are Herb Reynolds and his lovely wife Joy.

Supposedly, because of the nature of the partying, Herb would not allow Kevin to use Baylor in the movie. So, they became UT students.

As an old 70s BU accounting alum and Arthur Andersen alum, I'd be curious to know details. Probably not appropriate to post them here, but curious if it's someone I worked with.

According to this thread when we discussed this on Baylorfans, the Arthur Anderson partner is Joe Griffin.

There are probably just a handful of Waco institutions that have continually existed since 1948. Off the top of my head:
Baylor University
Suspension Bridge
ALICO Building
St. Francis on the Brazos
Cemeteries: Oakwood, First Street
Cameron Park
George's Restaurant
Waco-Trib
Dr. Pepper Museum
The house where Elvis lived (had to look up the build date - 1924)

What other major ones are there?
Is Tony still living under the bridge?

Do any businesses or firms still receive preferential treatment from city or county officials because of personal relationships, political contributions, or favors?

Can you take it somewhere else?

That **** has to end and is going to end.

Why don't you give some concrete current examples? That might be a good start towards ending it.
You mean like names and dates and real facts? lol.
I have found theres only two ways to go:
Living fast or dying slow.
I dont want to live forever.
But I will live while I'm here.

Edmond, thanks for posting this. My parens used to eat there while they attended Baylor. I recently moved back to Waco for 2 years and still love the peanut butter and choc. shakes.

To be clear, I'd much rather discuss food and drink rather than small town good ol' boy politics.

But, yes, just so you're clear: I was born and bred in McLennan County, both sides of my family have been in the county for well over 100 years, I have hundreds if not thousands of relatives still living in the area. I have been close to those who have been influential in McLennan County for nearly 50 years, and I maintain friendships with them and their children who were my childhood friends. So, unfortunately, I know everything. Even the rumors. When one party gets hurt around the area, they generally speak up. It's not my responsibility to fix anything; I just want it to get fixed, so that McLennan County and Waco can reflect the values they want to project to others. I think that is all the population expects in McLennan County.

And, it's why burger stands like Cupp's and Health Camp will continue to survive because that market likes predictability, they clearly are nostalgic and sentimental, and I think they enjoy going to places where they have had good memories and good experiences.

I wish I could, but I am getting to that age where I can't eat like I used to, Nevertheless, I am happy that young people and new residents to McLennan County today can enjoy some of these institutions that all of us used to enjoy as well.
