Waco (McLennan County)The Waco City Council recently entered into an agreement with an architectural firm to design a new barn at Cameron Park Zoo.

Last month, the council agreed to a contract with Austin-based Reliance Architecture for $60,790 to design a new hoof stock barn. The contract also establishes a design contingency in the amount of $8,079, for a total not to exceed $68,869.

The new barn is one of four projects at the zoo with a combined value of $14.5 million that voters agreed to finance in a bond proposal last November.

The other three projects will include a South African black-footed penguin exhibit ($4.4 million), the education and veterinary complex ($8 million) and a $100,000 remodeling of the commissary.

The zoo will award contracts in a four-phase approach in order to give as many companies the opportunity to participate in the bidding process.

The project is expected to be constructed at a total cost of $375,000.

This is some of the best news I've heard in weeks. The zoo is such an asset to the Waco community and deserves to be supported through this type of investment. I have a couple of photographer friends who routinely visit Waco just to take pictures at the zoo. And I've made it one of my regular daytrip destinations. Kudos to the voters and council for seeing the need and stepping up to meet it.

Agreed. Cameron Park Zoo is truly a tourist-caliber zoo. Almost twenty years ago (dang I'm old) when my oldest was two, I'd joke that you could go to the zoo to see both animals. It always had the backbone and structure to become a great zoo for a city our size.

They've invested a great deal of time and energy into making it one of the top five zoos in the state (lower five of course.)

I'm happy that the voters approved this.

Reading my mind. "Central Texas Zoo" was one of the worst zoos I even visited. Cameron Park Zoo is one of the best small zoos.

When the Brazos River Country area opened in 2005 it really took the zoo to another level.

I didnt remember the exact year. I just remembered early 90s. I was responding to someone mentioning how terrible the zoo was 20 years ago. My point is that Cameron Park Zoo is much older than 20 years old and it has been great since it opened.
