They had to shut down their restaurant this year due to the capacity limits killing them. Their tasting room was shut down for months because "it's a bar". I bet some frustrations may have mounted.
My dad always gave me this line about finances. You prepare for war at a time of peace. Sounds like he should have been saving his money...
Sounds like you don't know much about how difficult the restaurant business is and that he likely poured his life savings into the winery and then opening the restaurant downtown. It's a massive financial risk.
I'm not defending the guy, I don't know him. I'm just stating the reality of the situation. Pretty tough to just hear "suck it up buttercup, you're not allowed to operate your business and make money right now, because we say so."
