Guessing this over-rating Gonzaga is going to be an annual thing...

Better get used to it at least for the next decade or so… on the bright side they'll make history as the first team to be the top overall seed a decade straight and win zero titles

Yep, it seems that Gonzaga is the Texas of the basketball world.

Gonzaga consistently wins 30 games and has made two championship games in the past 8 years. When is the last time Texas football made the championship game? 2009?

Damm near any average P5 team is going to win 30 games in that garbage ass league. They're challenged what 3-4 times during the regular season?? They absolutely should be winning 30 games every regular season. They've been the overall 1 seed what 3-4 times? Zero titles and that trends going to continue

For all the talk of how much better Gonzaga is than everyone else in college basketball they've only made two final fours in the past 23 years.

A truly elite college basketball program is going to go to 4-6 Final Fours in a 15-20 year span and typically have at least one championship.

Gonzaga gets all the notoriety without the hardware to back it up.

Does it drive west coast viewership? I wouldn't think so but speculate maybe that's why they pump them. $ and eyeballs

How's their record putting guys in the association?

Houston and Creighton too high. But once they are so high initially self fulfilling as the competition isn't all that great, although Creighton plays some decent teams.

Gonzaga and Houston pretty much guaranteed to be inflated per rankings and the metrics the whole season as their comp is pretty bad. Respect Gonzaga but it's a little repetitive

Except they come close to earning it regularly. How far does Texas usually get in the tournament? A year ago Gonzaga made it to the title game & that was not the first time. They also have more wins & probably more quality wins most years. I'm not going to discuss conference records because Texas at least plays in the toughest conference in college basketball while the Zags have something like a cakewalk each year.

In that case then I take it back. Except Texas football has done worse than their basketball team in recent years. But the Big 12 is definitely not the best football conference, probably somewhere in the middle of the P5.

I had thought about that possibility but this is a basketball thread.

Basketball pundits and scribes have invested a lot of emotional capital in the little school with the funny name. They will continue to do so until until they see their dream realized.

Ok, but they're eons better at basketball than Texas is at football.

I definitely dont hate Gonzaga. I just am slightly annoyed that the media overrates them and their non-schedule these days.

Its not directed at Gonzaga. But the media & polls.

Well, the Bears will have a chance to test that ranking in Dec. Gonzaga likely wins that game, unless the summer tourney helps the Bears build chemistry quickly. Zags bringing back some big pieces and adding some as well. I will be happy ti be wrong, but we have a bunch of new pieces and without JTT I am not sure what we will have at the 5 if Thamba gets in foul trouble.

We won't have a good idea of how good we are until we see George and Love play. I am assuming JTT won't be ready by then.

George should be special and most of these early rankings are not taking into account we have essentially another top 50 recruit "coming in" just with a year of physical development and a chance to get adjusted to the speed. Optimistic that Love will be a "surprise" and nice contributor both ends of the floor.

If Flagler continues to improve his ball skills, could be a very good year. A little too light in the frontcourt for most of us but have to make due and hopefully JTT can make it back by Feb. Would be fresh to play out the year and not disrupt the flow. Completely understandable if they want to sit him out the full year but stranger things have happened. With JTT late in the year this team is top 3 level.

A lot of people seem to be taking these preseason polls too seriously. They really do not mean anything. Yes, it's nice to see Baylor ranked high at any time but it's much more meaningful if it's based upon actual games played instead of guesswork by reporters. Even the polls in December & January can be skewed, much more so in the early summer. Even the coaches may not know who will be starting in November.

And yes Gonzaga is way better than Texas football. Not close. They haven't come close to the CFP which is the equivalent of the final 4. Gonzaga has played for 2 titles.

The smaller issue is the rankings and metrics can't appropriately adjust for level of comp. Its not done properly in the more involved analytics. So Gonzaga and to a lesser extent Houston are typically overrated by the metrics. If you start to gain a baseline level of respect and lose just a few games a year you end up top 5, even playing only 5 to 6 teams a year that can beat you.

As opposed to playing a tough non-conference and a grinder in conference where we know either team would lose a minimum of 5 -6 games and a few of those losses would be by a decent margin. You're playing 14 games where you could legitimately lose compared to probably 5 max. And of those 5, only 1 or 2 of those teams can beat you by more than 5 + points

Agree on Love, but it is just really hard to predict how someone will come back from an injury like that. I think most people close to the program don't have JTT coming back til next season. I hope he can make it back earlier, but I think the two transfers and the freshman can keep the 4-5 spots in tact. All they have to do is be somewhat of a scoring threat, rebound and play D. None of them will be expected to score more than 8-10 points a game as a position group. Anything over that is gravy. Scoring 1-3 is going to be unreal assuming everyone stays healthy.

Love and the two freshman will determine how far we can go. I've seen clips of the Freshman center and he looks like a Player.

Can lLove and George rebound and defend well enough to occasionally go with a 4 guard lineup?

Defense is usually what takes a bit of time to develop even if the players are talented so hard to say but they both have better size than we typically have at the guard spot so the potential is there. We are going to have good size at guard.

I think Love will surprise and come back well but nothing is sure with ligament injuries.

Unfortunately, that is most likely but I wouldn't put it past him to make it back ahead of schedule. Not something to mess around with but if Jon was able to come in healthy late in the season would bring that last piece that makes the team a top title contender.
