Horrible defense. Horrible BB IQ among several players. No inside game. No sense of urgency. Last shot plays are horrible. In bound plays are vanilla.

Love Drew but this is a poor job of coaching. How did this happen?

We lost Tang in basketball and Maguire in football. Both were more important to the programs than we first thought.

Tang did a masterful job of stealing points on inbound plays he knew we wouldn't be able to guard. He picked up cheap points everywhere.

Face it, down year for Baylor basketball. We were due one. Nothing more.

Yep. This isn't the first one either. And they always coincide with recruiting misses and/or some fatal roster flaw.
  • We had one in 2008-09 when we couldn't defend at all (until switching to the zone in the Big 12 tournament).
  • We had one in 2010-11 when we had no point guard
  • We had one in 2012-13 when we couldn't defend at all
  • We had one in 2017-18 when we had no point guard
  • We're having one now when we can't defend at all and have no true point guard (though I don't think offense is a problem)
These things happen in college basketball because some guys just don't live up to their billing and/or the roles you carve out for them.

But trying to make trends out of one-off occurrences is silly. History suggest we'll be just fine. So does the talent we have coming in the next two years.

Because we had hit on basically every transfer we've had since Pierre Jackson and gotten an extra year out of multiple one-and-done talents. Those breaks were bound to go the other way at some point, and they did with Sochan leaving and Bridges and Lohner not living up to their billing.

Agreed 100% we were due. We will look back on this season as a transition year. This year reminds me of our 2017-2018 season when we played in the NIT following our sweet 16 appearance the 2016-2017 season. We had a great run 4 straight seasons after that 2017-2018 season until now. Drew will just need to recalibrate some things. The good news is we have some insanely talented recruiting classes coming in consecutive years. Hit on a couple portal transfers and we are back making elite 8s and final 4s as soon as next year.

Because on team is "up" every year. Because you don't win at black jack every time. Because the game is changing (NIL and the portal). Because no team is always great but teams do get on great runs.

You know very little about the program, but it is easy to speculate from a distance. Your opinion has no basis.

Tang is a great coach. He was not the special sauce.

Drew is not soft and he is not lost. Every sentence you wrote is incorrect.

Kind of like Kansas does?
Crawfoso1973
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Kansas' program culture and our culture are apples and oranges. Kansas gets rid of recruits immediately who don't pan out and replaces them like cattle. They also blatantly committ NCAA violations and will go to any means necessary to avoid a down year. That's not our culture of JOY.

For everyone attributing this disappointing season to Tang's departure....Tang is awesome but not sure even Tang could do any better with this roster. In successive years we lost Davion, Teague, Vital, Butler, Sochan, KB, MM, EJ. All plus defenders. And due to a variety of factors we whiffed on the recruits to replace them: Dainja, Turner, Lohner, Bridges, Loveday have all fallen short of expectations by varying degrees. And we don't cut or kick kids to the curb who don't immediately contribute. Injuries to EJ, Love, and Cryer also stunted our team's growth and continuity. Murphy's Law sucks but it happens. We had a great 4 year run and I'm confident this year's disappointment will springboard us to future elite 8s and final 4s.
IowaBear
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Dainja is averaging like 10 and 5 and shooting like 65% definitely didn't whiff on him. He was deemed to not be a cultural fit here whatever that means. The others yes whiffs. Didn't get the signing of Bridges or Lohner at the time and still don't
Crawfoso1973
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes, Dainja was a bad fit for us for whatever reason. It happens. Bridges I actually don't think I should have lumped with that group he has contributed and shown flashes the past couple of games.

How dare you take a reasonable, rational approach? This is an Internet message board. We're supposed to melt down, overreact, say that our National Championship winning coach has forgotten how to coach, and that an assistant was clearly the secret sauce behind our success. Even though our coach found that assistant at a small, private high school, where he was making $16k/year. But yeah, it was clearly Tang alone that could identify/develop talent.

People have short-term memories. We easily forget that most Scott Drew teams get better throughout the season. 2021 was awesome from the start and, apart from a minor COVID hiccup, stayed awesome throughout. 2022 was devastated by injuries, and we were clearly worse by the end of the season than we were coming out of non-conference play. Aside from that, our teams have consistently grown and improved as the season progresses. Give it some time. We're probably not an Elite 8 team this year, and may not even be a Sweet 16 team, but we're going to be better than we've shown the past week. I truly believe that.

It's not overacting to say this is a really bad defensive team. It has been all season, outside of a couple of one-off performances.

Nor is it unreasonable to conclude that that's unlikely to change, given that our best offensive personnel make our defense worse and vice versa.

This roster just isn't up to the standard that we've set the past decade or so, and like our other teams that have struggled under Drew, it has flaws that put a hard ceiling on what it can accomplish.

It's absolutely flawed. But we've seen less talented Baylor teams than this one advance to the second weekend. Heck, this team would blow out our 2014 squad that made the Sweet 16.

We need to string together some competent defensive performances and get offensive contributions from people 6'5" and taller. It's a big ask, but it's not impossible.

This has been such a disappointing start, but I'm trying to be patient too. It's certainly possible we can see improvement as the season goes on. I think Drew has shown us that ability.

One big concern though is losing back to back home games. As tough as this league is if we can't protect home court that record can get ugly really fast.

This team wouldn't blow out any of our good teams. That's silly.

To get separation, you have to make stops. This team is incapable of doing so.

Any of our good teams would handle this one, which has two good wins all year.

Time to go a 4 guard system, run and gun. Nothing by 3 point shots. We are not built for the traditional 4/5 style. So take the gamble of playing extra aggressive....then at the end of the season, start dropping players like Lohner who have no business playing for us...

We would give up 100 points per game playing four guards.
