Will we ever have a game where all three guards play well?

It feels like they get together in the locker room and one will say, "I'm gonna miss everything tonight, so you two feel free to go off."

How amazing would it be to see all three shoot well in the sane game?

Just a hunch, but I think will see all 3 go off during a big conference game in the near future. Maybe at KSU or at KU. It's coming

A big difference between this team and our National Championship team (which is arguably the best team in the last 30 years since the inception of the one and done era) is that team had 4 guards who could really score and this team only has 3. It was common for one of our guards on the Natty team to have an off night and yet barely noticed.

Not yet writing off Love as that 4th consistent scoring guard. He's shown flashes and still a lot of basketball yet to be played.

Nova 18' was probably better. UK 12' has arguments as well but get the sentiment. It was an ATG level team for the college level.

I think more than just generic 3 scorers v 4 scorers is the level of skill on offense. 3 of the 4 guards had top level handles with Butler and Davion being top 5 ball handlers in all of cbb that year. Butler was like a college level Kyrie at times off the dribble. Teague had underrated handles and penetrating ability.

All 3 could get to the rim better than anyone on our current team other than Keyonte. They also could all shoot off both the dribble and the catch. They all were great tough shot makers. Flag could as well and didn't have to reach playing outside his natural spot like he does this year. Openings were abundant as nobody could be left alone. All 3 were also great skip passers.. leading to so many open looks. Watch I think it was Ark and/or Hou.. the teams that tried any aggressive hedge overplay style defense got destroyed by those passes.

They also all had great mid range finishes. Floaters, pull ups, off wrong foot layups.. it was crazy how efficient they were at times. Villanova was probably our toughest game of the tourney where the 3 just wasn't there. They started look to get to the rim and made all kinds of plays inside 15 ft. Flag also had a great little leaner/floater game as well and was near automatic on mid range pull ups.

I remember a time wondering if Teague, Mitchell, and Butler would put it all together at the same time. And then they did. This could happen. Tonight would be a great time to start.

After tonight and Arkansas all 3 need some work. Both games we appeared to struggle with aggressive defense pushing out. We need some pick and roll action when this happens. Ran one successful with Flo but that was all I saw.

George was heroic at the end vs Arkansas but needed to stop the long ball 3s tonight. He cost us some key possessions and got lazy on defense a couple times. Fran even commented on it. He's a future NBA all star I get it but we won't go very far in March if we meet a long athletic team that can push out in man vs our guards. At some point we'll have an off shooting night. Drew needs to have a contingency plan because tonight it seemed to simply be hope someone gets hot shooting contested long balls or tough 2s.

George was a difference-maker at the end of the Arkansas game, and I'm not taking that away from him. But those spurts are fool's gold to some extent because they mask the fact that the was shooting 29.4 percent before hitting three tough, clutch shots in a row.

Those shots were huge, obviously, and they show the type of ability he has. But if he wasn't 5 for 17 before that, we might not have been in that situation.

The same was true tonight. He had two awesome takes in a row late in the game. But he followed that with a heat check 3 that was 100 percent unnecessary to finish 5 of 18 for the game. You're shooting 29 percent and you decide to put the outcome of the game on one 30-foot shot. Why???

Just my opinion but I really think we would be better suited if Flagler and Cryer lead us in shot attempts per game. Granted Flag has been in a slump but Keyonte is struggling to shoot above 40% every game. And it seems like he always starts out ice cold

Agreed. Cryer has been on fire the past few games so would like more set plays for him in crunch time, instead of hero ball from Keyonte. And I say this as a huge fan of Keyonte.

Agree with both of you. When we're up let George test a hero ball and if he's hitting he can take a couple more but if he's not then let him slash the lane and draw the foul or kick out to Cryer and Flagler
Quinton

Im high on George but that 30 footer was wild. Unless you are Steph Curry you don't take that shot in that situation.

Don't know how but after getting out of rhythm starting with OU, has regressed back to previous games. Strange shot selection and just can't buy a bucket for stretches. And when offense is struggling, you can see the break down in defensive focus. Thought we had gotten over the hump/learning curve. It will come but Feb is the month to build consistency.

Flagler has been struggling a bit as well and did not like that quick 3 down 2 at the end of the game. They are in the bonus with at minimum another possession so didn't make much sense. I think if Love was healthy could have stolen this one but didn't happen.

To answer the OP question.....I sure hope so. In past years I have seen Baylor players, whoever they were, where seemingly none of them could hit the ocean. The games before or after could be great, but we have had some real stinkers.

Drew has to call a timeout in that situation.
boykin_spaniel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
We were down to one timeout. Drew needs to turn off the hero ball shots. George took a few and Cryer took one late. Granted Drew didn't look to pleased after a couple of them. I trust the coaching staff and veterans to get back to playing solid ball
Quinton
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's right.. Cryer took one as well. All 3 took a bad shot late game.

Guess we will have to wait for those 3 to put it all together at the same time. I would say last night they all looked off. That said if we can hang in there against the #10 team with all of them off then we still have potential upside.

All in all, we've had a pretty frustrating history of high expectation "star players" often being inconsistent and being off or virtually disappearing at the most inopportune times, including multiple players in the Drew era. KG has clearly had his bright moments where he has looked like the 5 star high scoring one and done he was cracked up to be, but he's also had as many or more moments where he's ice cold and is throwing up wild contested prayers that have little to no chance of going in. Part of the frustration is this is the only season we'll have him, so you doubly hate the recurring stretches of poor decision making, poor shooting, and poor defense.

Last night all we needed was to make a few layups. We looked as bad on those at times as we did on the long 3's.

Very true. Some head scratching freebies were missed. Can't win many games in the Big 12 doing that.
