We lose a close one at Texas and then smoke Tech by 27 and we drop 3 spots??

In fairness, it's hard to say Marquette and Iowa State -- two of the teams that jumped us -- should be behind us given the results when we played them. And Kansas State likely held their spot in front of us in part because of their win in Waco.Jayman1963 said:

But the important thing to remember is that the AP poll doesn't matter at all. Just keep playing good basketball, and everything takes care of itself.
It's not causal, but it is correlative. Of the last 10 national champs, 8 finished the regular season in the top four in the AP poll, and only UConn's insane 2014 run came from below #7 (Nova 2016 was that one). Of course nothing's stopping anyone from winning in any given year, but AP poll rankings do give you a very good barometer of generally who's going to win EOY.bear2be2 said:In fairness, it's hard to say Marquette and Iowa State -- two of the teams that jumped us -- should be behind us given the results when we played them. I agree. I was one that thought Jon even in a limited state could change the dynamic of this team. I think we saw glimpses of that. Fills holes on D, brings the intensity that was missing, and opens up the floor on O (and that was without this 3 point shot that surprised me). We beat Tex with Jon and Love healthy (meaning can play I know they aren't 100%).IowaBear said:
This team really should be 20-6 headed to Lawrence. Don't want to get ahead of myself but OU and WV in Waco should be wins. And TCU won't have Miles. Have to take advantage of that. Win the next 3 and we're set up for a fantastic finish
I mean the Iowa State team that has a nearly identical record to us and housed us in Ames. We'll get another shot at them. But they beat our ass the one time we played this year.whitetrash said:You mean the IowaSt team that blew a 19 point second half lead to a team that was winless in conference?bear2be2 said:In fairness, it's hard to say Marquette and Iowa State -- two of the teams that jumped us -- should be behind us given the results when we played them. You could create a poll based on record alone that would get the the national champion in the top 5-10 most years. That's not really saying much.parch said:It's not causal, but it is correlative. Ultimately it does matter, but not in a way that any of us can predict or control, because AP rank goes into the soup the selection committee uses to seed out the tournament. And as we know sometimes you have a great year and you just hit a St. Peter's. So goes the tourney.bear2be2 said:You could create a poll based on record alone that would get the the national champion in the top 5-10 most years. It's the nit-picking that that takes place from about the 10 spot to 25 that makes human polling both impossible and extremely subjective. Everyone wants a good enough record to be in the top five of the AP poll. That means you're likely one of the few elite teams in college basketball that year. But there's no good reason to get worked up over poll rankings, especially in a sport with a massive postseason tournament at the end.

Only poll that matters is the last one.
With the NET rankings and an objective ranking system for wins, the human polls have never mattered less. The NCAA tournament committee uses its own criteria for seeding and selection that is 100 percent independent of the AP poll.parch said:Ultimately it does matter, but not in a way that any of us can predict or control, because AP rank goes into the soup the selection committee uses to seed out the tournament. Even still, they're not going to give a #2 seed to the #12 team in the AP poll because KenPom has them #3 because of their SoS and defensive usage rate, for instance. Within a few places seeding almost always follows polling convention, so it does behoove a team to at the very least maneuver into the top 12-15 places to boost seeding. Because since seeding began in 1979 there have been exactly 5 teams from 4 seed and below to win a natty, and every team is trying to maneuver their way out of that deadzone.

I was surprised we moved all the up to 11th the week before, but since we did, I'm equally surprised we got punished this much for losing a close, competitive road game to a team that was ranked above us - especially since we more than took care of business in the other game last week (not to mention the going forward impact of now having EJ back). Nothing to "lose sleep over" but still puzzling.
