Gotta think Tech is the heavy favorite. However with Bonner and Cryer leaving we can offer him immediate playing time. Hard to imagine he wouldn't be one of the top dogs on our team from day 1

I'd love to have Perry. He's a great player and an outstanding leader.

But I bet he ends up back with McCasland at Tech.

I keep harping on defense. How is he in that side of the floor?

He's good on that end but only 5'11

Can he dress up as Madea and play for the women's team too?

If he was a prominent member of the North Texas team this year (and he was probably the most prominent), you can feel pretty confident that he's a good defender. UNT was 18th nationally in defensive efficiency this season. Those fellas would lock you down.

It's gonna be interesting seeing McCasland, Tang and Drew bumping heads in the recruiting circles going for the same kids now. Gotta believe Tech would be the odds on favorite, but you never know.

And I agree with Bear2 on the D part. The times I watched UNT this year, they really got after you defensively.

My in-laws live in Denton and go to a fair number of UNT men's games. I went and saw them play Old Dominion last year and unfortunately Perry got hurt in that game.

McCasland did a great job with that program, though. Once he got things established, his teams were always good and gritty.

I admittedly didn't watch UNT play this year and know little to nothing about this player, but for one thing I thought we were (understandably) trying to get taller and longer at the guard position and this dude is 5'11". I'm sure he has skills, but I'm wondering if that's a bit of a non-starter for us.

That may be the reason he's in the portal.

This will be interesting. He seems to like us. Gotta believe that McCasland has an inside advantage. And Florida, Tennessee and Louisville cooperatives are allegedly coming with a boat load of $$$$.

He spent two good years there, which is all any school can/should expect from a JUCO transfer.

This is his one and final chance to go play in a major conference and potentially get a nice NIL paycheck at the same time. No one can blame him for taking advantage of that, particularly given that he's unlikely to be an NBA player after college.

I would imagine Perry would have very fond things to say about his time at UNT, if asked. But in the transfer portal era, guys are going to make decisions in the best interest of their careers, and there's nothing necessarily wrong with that.

Maybe the SEC schools are offering more NIL $$$$. I hope that's not it but nowadays that's probably as likely a reason as another.

Officially OUT.

Final 4: Tech, Ole Miss, Florida and Kansas St.

Chalk another up to NIL.

For the record, the odds on favorite is allegedly Ole Miss. Beard and the Ole Miss collective reportedly put together a package he's not likely to refuse. Florida's package wasn't too far behind.

I bet NIL is driving unspoken wedges into locker rooms now too. Whoever signs this dude is backing up the Brinks truck before he plays a second wherever he's going. You think the best player wherever he's going is completely cool with knowing his school is valuing this G5 transfer more than anyone else?

Weird days we're in.

That's a good point… Which leads me to believe that with many programs, there is a lot of NIL negotiation going on and incentives being given to keep players already in the program. If you're not doing that, I don't see how you can reasonably retain players or have good team chemistry.

Yeah, every program is now essentially forced to constantly re-recruit every player they already have. You have to wonder if it's in the back of the coaches' minds. "If I don't promise this guy play X number of minutes or X number of shots, they will bolt for the transfer portal."

Look no further than Perry's list to confirm the flow of funds. Notice in his initial 8, Kansas State is nowhere to be found. They only got involved in the last week when Tang worked to get the K State fund to come up with an offer. Drew may not believe in NIL, but Tang damn sure does.

You'll see the following schools on almost every highly recruited transfer's list because these schools have let it be known they are coming with $$$$ in hand: Arkansas, Florida, Alabama, Kansas St, Ole Miss, Louisville, WVU, Iowa St, Tech, and Indiana.

Are we not offering any NIL? Or just less than most? How does Athlete plus from this site get involved for new guys/gals? Or is it just for players already here?

This is just based on my read of Drew's few comments on it, but it seems less an issue that we don't offer any NIL, but rather that we don't lead recruiting conversations with it and prioritize it above fit. I get the sense that Drew backs off the gas if the recruit comes in with something like, "how much can you pay me."

All this is so new that I have no idea if that approach is long-run beneficial or not. I'd guess he's betting on those guys, in a non-NIL era, would've been the low EQ/locker room cancer guys that he'd shy away from recruiting anyway. In which case the money ask is doing the winnowing work for him anyway.
DanaDane

If he's thinking that way, then I can't say that I fully agree with the way he's thinking. True, pre-NIL, it wasn't unusual to find a lot of malcontents who transferred to other schools and Drew successfully avoided those like a plague (with 1 exception several years ago).

Now, the ones transferring aren't necessarily malcontent. It's now just as easily a kid who is an incredible worker, but had to go through a smaller school and "earn" his way to the High Major level because he was overlooked initially or maybe grew during that timeframe. He puts up good numbers and then can also get rewarded for those skills with money, something very few of us would turn down if offered. That's basically the Adam Flagler path, but since there was no NIL at the time we got him. I wonder if we would get him if Flagler was a frosh at Presbyterian this past year.

And for the question above, the package for Perry was allegedly well into the 6 figures. I'm pretty sure we don't have anyone on the current roster with 6 figure NIL deals. Someone can correct me if they know differently.
