If Self had an angiogram and then either balloon angioplasty or stents, he should be fine. That's especially true if he did not have a heart attack and that was how it was reported. If he had been diagnosed with more serious blockage the interventional cardiologist and heart surgeons would have done bypass surgery. Of course he could have other heart disease issues we are not aware of which would be more serious.

Am I a cardiologist? No.

But four years ago I had a very similar event which resulted in 2 stents. I'm totally fine and I'm 14 years older than Self.

Now, he might decide to walk away like the Villanova coach, but it likely will not be health related…at least for a while.

I wish him the best health and a 8th place finish in the league next year.

It absolutely can happen at any age. My fellow Baylor Fans (and friends) listen to me:

My Dad died at age 59 of a heart attack. That was in 1971...in a different time, of course. He had no symptoms other than shortness of breath. One and done, sadly.

Four and one half years ago, at age 69, I began to feel shortness of breath. No chest pains. No arm pains. No dizziness.

We live at 7200' in Santa Fe, so at first I just thought it was the altitude, but then I used my good Baylor educated brain and I thought...I've been here five years and why would I suddenly have shortness of breath?

I went to my internist (shortly after all of this, I fired him) and told him about my shortness of breath. He basically blew me off. "You know, you're 69". BS

I found another internist who listened to me and connected me with a wonderful interventional cardiologist. I told him my story and he scheduled me for an angiogram the next day. The result? Two arteries blocked 99%. Two stents.

He told me I had maybe a month or two, at best, without the stents.

Be your own advocate. You know your body better than anyone.

I walked 4 miles today with no problems. I walk 4 miles every day. Make good use of the miracle of modern medicine.

I've also lost 35 pounds...that doesn't hurt! I weigh today what I weighed when I graduated from Baylor 52 years ago, 185. You can do it also. Take charge of your health.
