Clever marketing. I expect they will get a good response.

This is completely legal under the current rules (or lack thereof), so I don't have an issue with it. But they really need to stop calling it NIL (name, image and likeness) and replace it with new name for what it is (direct pay-for-play payments).

Call actual NIL deals NIL and come up with a new, more accurate name for the rest.

If you called it something else, nobody would know what you're talking about. It is what it is.

"NIL Plays A Significant Role In Recruiting"

Wasn't supposed to! Unconscionable how the NCAA failed to read the tea leaves on how this would go.

The NCAA's interim NIL policy falls back on existing rules and makes it impermissible for NIL deals to be used as recruiting inducements or pay-for-play or performance-based compensation.

They probably had no idea what to do. SCOTUS completely flummoxed them and maybe they are still trying to figure it out. Maybe they are waiting to see how things shake out before trying to devise new rules. Lastly, they must be very careful. After losing in court, they don't want to risk another costly law suit.

The situation is so new, everyone is trying to come up with strategies. It's easier for schools with lots of $$$$ but that won't guarantee success.

I mean, yeah, you have one of the more currently visible college athletes of the moment openly advocating for NIL money so K-State can pay recruits to come play in diametric opposition to a rule he (among many, many others) is very clearly breaking.

The NCAA probably doesn't have the means, energy or fight to stop this from happening, because the rule itself is unenforceable. I don't know what the answer is, but it's clear the NCAA doesn't either.

NIL has existed for one year. It's not like it's an established term tested by time, and no one could ever adjust to more accurate terminology.

But NIL is a wholly inaccurate description at this point for these payments. And it's a farce to call pay-for-play payments NIL, particularly when real NIL deals still exist. If this is going to be the new landscape, using one catch-all term that doesn't accurately describe most of these transactions is silly.

The NCAA has no control or jurisdiction. Everyone knew how this would go, but that's what happens when years and years of regressive and reactive rules making and enforcement gets the courts involved.

Court decisions have rendered the NCAA useless in making or enforcing NIL rules.
