Grimes needs to be in the rotation. This team has a lot of different combinations that Drew can throw out there.

Is Grimes's defense better than Nunn or Dennis?

It wasn't a coincidence that we finally put some appropriate distance between us and an opponent that should've been an easy home win from the get go when he was on the floor in the second half. His play was outstanding .

So, do you give him a chance at starting? Over whom?

At this point I wouldn't start him over Dennis, but as another poster suggested, I think he should be in the normal rotation and regularly see significant minutes. I know Drew likes to ultimately go with a rotation of 8 by the time conference rolls around, but with this team's depth, I'm thinking that should be expanded to 9-10 this season when you've got players like Love, Grimes, Lohner, and two of the three post players that don't start between Missi, EJ, and Josh O coming off the bench.

I don't think he needs to start and might be better bringing energy from the bench. 5 guards rotating in and 3 spots in the lineup. Plenty of minutes to go around.

He won't start, but he definitely locked up the backup PG duties over Little.

This. There's room for Grimes in the rotation as the fifth guard. And we'll have to wait and see whether he can repeat this level of performance against the better teams on our schedule. But if he continues to play well, he'll see his playing time continue to grow, and we'll just ride the hottest hands among our five rotation guards every game.

I will say that Grimes' emergence likely leaves Little as the odd man out. But that's not a bad thing. Little needs to improve quite a bit to get to the level of the top four guards, but he's got lots of time to do it. This will just be a developmental year for him. Practicing against those guys every day can't hurt.

Ok... Now the flip side of this question:

Do we not need more defensive help / production from the guard position? Is Grimes the answer to that?

I guess what I'm saying is that Nunn and Dennis need to produce more defensively in my opinion. If they can step it up, great. If not, that's when maybe Grimes gets a chance.

And i'm not saying take either out of the rotation, so it's not really a big deal. They're both really good players.

If anyone watched the Canada games they would know what he is made of..he deserves more time and starting one game could wake up Dennis about the TOs.

I think our defense will get better as we settle on more concrete roles. We're still feeling a lot of things out right now.

I also think Grimes will always be the change-up or curveball to Dennis and Nunn's fastball because the offense those two provide is too important. But having that change of pace will be a huge deal if Grimes can consistently provide it.

Grimes brings the ball up the floor and looks to run the offense…Dennis brings the ball up the floor and looks for his shot.

I don't think that's an accurate assessment of Dennis. He can do it both, score and distribute. I like how he can get in the paint and either score or hit the open guy. He has elite court vision. Just gotta clean up the turnovers.

If he doesn't clean up the TOs he's going to lose PT to Grimes (assuming Grimes continues to improve) Dennis has been a TO machine… it's early but that's definitely concerning.

Dennis had four of our seven assists as a team yesterday and is more than doubling the next highest assist guy for the season with 4.7 per game. Let's not bring imagined narratives into this discussion.

RayJ Dennis is a scoring point guard. And he's been too careless with the ball through the first three games. But he is not at all a selfish player. He's right about even with Walter and Love in field goal attempts and has committed most of his turnovers trying to force ill-advised passes.

Let's also not overstate our case on Grimes, who has now put one really good stretch (last night) and one really bad stretch (against Auburn) on film. Hopefully the Gardner-Webb performance proves to be more representative of his abilities. But he's got a long way to go before he starts seriously cutting into RayJ's minutes.

This is what I'm thinking. He's competing for minutes mainly with Little for now. If he continues to be productive maybe he bites into Nunn and Dennis' minutes.

I think the Little/Grimes competition ended last night. Drew played Grimes down the stretch when the game was still in doubt. That's probably telling. It'll be interesting to see how many minutes he logs tomm ahead of next weeks tourney

Had a few 1st game 'deer in the headlights' on this one. Not gonna hold it against Grimes. If it turns into the norm, then okay.
