Grimes needs to be in the rotation. This team has a lot of different combinations that Drew can throw out there.

So, do you give him a chance at starting? Over whom?
This. There's room for Grimes in the rotation as the fifth guard. And we'll have to wait and see whether he can repeat this level of performance against the better teams on our schedule. But if he continues to play well, he'll see his playing time continue to grow, and we'll just ride the hottest hands among our five rotation guards every game.Crawfoso1973 said:
I don't think he needs to start and might be better bringing energy from the bench. 5 guards rotating in and 3 spots in the lineup. Plenty of minutes to go around.
I think our defense will get better as we settle on more concrete roles. We're still feeling a lot of things out right now.Married A Horn said:
Ok... Now the flip side of this question:
Do we not need more defensive help / production from the guard position? Is Grimes the answer to that?
I guess what I'm saying is that Nunn and Dennis need to produce more defensively in my opinion. If they can step it up, great. If not, that's when maybe Grimes gets a chance.
And i'm not saying take either out of the rotation, so it's not really a big deal. They're both really good players.
I don't think that's an accurate assessment of Dennis. He can do it both, score and distribute. I like how he can get in the paint and either score or hit the open guy. He has elite court vision. Just gotta clean up the turnovers.BUCANDOIT82 said:
Grimes brings the ball up the floor and looks to run the offense…Dennis brings the ball up the floor and looks for his shot.
Dennis had four of our seven assists as a team yesterday and is more than doubling the next highest assist guy for the season with 4.7 per game. Let's not bring imagined narratives into this discussion.BUCANDOIT82 said:

This is what I'm thinking. He's competing for minutes mainly with Little for now. If he continues to be productive maybe he bites into Nunn and Dennis' minutes.IowaBear said:
He won't start, but he definitely locked up the backup PG duties over Little.

RayJ Dennis is a scoring point guard. And he's been too careless with the ball through the first three games. But he is not at all a selfish player. He's right about even with Walter and Love in field goal attempts and has committed most of his turnovers trying to force ill-advised passes.
Let's also not overstate our case on Grimes, who has now put one really good stretch (last night) and one really bad stretch (against Auburn) on film. Hopefully the Gardner-Webb performance proves to be more representative of his abilities. But he's got a long way to go before he starts seriously cutting into RayJ's minutes.
