But even elite programs cannot "assume" or "expect" a sweet 16 berth. They have to win the games in front of them to earn it. The tournament is driven by matchups which is why so many upsets happen every year. Not making the NCAA tournament might be considered a failure (witness all the coaching exits on power 5 teams not making the tourney 3 years straight). Losing in the first round if you are a top 2-3 seed might be considered a failure. Getting to the Sweet 16 would have to be considered a successful season for any team. We were really, really good in 2021...we all knew that...but we hit a wall in the tournament against Villanova. No one could make a shot. Without Davion and co. taking over the game defensively, we are out. To win 6 straight in this day and age, you have to be both good and lucky. One injury, one difficult matchup, one cold shooting night, one bad call, and the really good go home. Its why the Tournament is so insane and why I love it.
