Posted Walter's stats in thread last night but wanted to expand to whole team. First number is 3P and second number over all Fg. Only conference games included and ranked by total shots taken

Walter: .238 on 80 shots, overall .321 on 137 shots
Ray J: .341 on 44 shots, overall .420 on 131 shots
Bridges : .366 on 71 shots, overall .435 on 124 shots
Nunn: .44 on 50 shots, overall .505 on 97 shots
Love: .531 on 32 shots, .447 on 85 shots

Notes and observations:

-we need love healthy. Shooting 3s at a better rate than 2s
-miro only taken 6 3s and missed all of them. Hope that improves with play time and confidence but small sample size
-Messi no 3s but .633 FG on 90 shots. Need to run more through him
-despite Walter's poor shooting, he has 20 more FT attempts than next closest player and shoots them at 83% clip. Many games I'll check his box score to see he finished with decent point total only to see more than half are free throws

Really wish Walter would attempt drives to the basket and not settle for threes so often. He falls in love with that shot, but his numbers are just not there. It's likely the first time in his career that he has struggled because the competition is more athletic than he is. I think he is a good shooter going through the typical struggles of a freshman. I was one of those that was really excited about him coming in to plug the Keyonte freshman hole primarily because of his defense. It is pretty obvious now that he struggles there and just doesn't have the bag of tricks that Keyonte had to score. Still really glad he is a Bear, and know it is a stretch, but he is the perfect candidate for a year 2 to round out his game. I know that is not likely. But as others have pointed out, I can't imagine his stock is a lottery anymore. Missi on the other hand…

Walter has a lot of tricks in his bag, but not many of them correlate to clean looks. He settles a lot, can't seem to separate on drives and is super flighty from range. I know he's going pro after this year, but he really needs another season to learn how to operate with grown men harassing his shot. Even when he gets 23, like he did against WVU, he needed 17 shots to get there and a huge chunk of those came from the free throw line.

We have such a strong presence down low with Messi and a great #2 off the bench with Josh O shooting 78% on 36 shots that we should be able to kick out to open shooters. Just have to actually knock them down. Combined Josh and Messi shooting .674 on 126 shots

Missi and Ojianwuna are both good finishers, but neither has much in the way of post moves. Every once in while, both will have a nice drive or move that shows their potential, but neither is really a guy you can run offense through. They're good rollers and finishers, but they get their points off the strength of our sets/point guard play, not their own post prowess.

It's a tough situation for Drew.

The empty possessions from either missed shots or turnovers from Walter is hurting the team.

We need Walter to produce to have a chance of a tourney run.

I think Drew is trying to get Walter ready for the tournament or atleast hoping he finds his shot before the end of the year but most nights we would do better with him playing less minutes.

Good post, I think he was like 3 or 4 of 14 shots from three. That's a killer from a possession standpoint point and how many of those misses are turning into points going the other direction.

Walter has a nice pull up shot and floater. I wish he would use them more often. If there is a crease try to get to the bucket and get fouled and/or score.

We need him to be a scoring option for sure. Oftentimes he has a lesser defender on him. Just less volume of 3 point attempts please.

THIS! I wish we would see more of this instead of settling for off balance heaves at times. But, that's the tradeoff you get with a freshman who is learning his way at this level and against vastly better defenders than he faced in high school and AAU.

What makes Walter a top 10 NBA pick? I don't see elite speed or elite handles or elite passing or elite creation or elite jumping or elite height

I don't know about top 10, but certainly the same things that made Keyonte a top 20 pick. Their freshman numbers are pretty similar in most respects, and Key just dropped 33 in his last game and certainly looks like he can hang in the NBA at 20.

Walter's biggest problem so far is that he's not the 3-point shooter we were sold in his bill of goods. He's super springy and can get to the hole, but he has been garbage from 3 for most of the year. Here are his 3-point shooting splits in Big 12 play:

That's bad. It's not like he's just had a few off nights. He's shooting from deep as though he's basically useless from back there, and that's not at all what his scouting report reads.

I don't see the same scoring ability from Walter, Keyonte was/is a much better driver/passer and could hit the crazy off balance shot that most players in college could never make. This is no knock on Walter, I think he is a really good player. He is likely the kind of guy that back in the day would stay 3-4 years and each year improve and be a mature all conference player by his Junior year. Not worth debating him getting drafted, it's going to happen this year. I don't think I would spend a lottery pick on him however, primarily because of his limited athleticism. Unless he moves to the fringe 1st round or early second he really has to go. It's just part of the system. I wish it was like baseball, go after high school or go through at least three years of college.

Walter is only averaging 1ppg less than George did last year so far, and he's done it on far fewer 3-pointers made. He's a better to-the-basket player than George was, he gets to the line more and is also a much better FT shooter. George was quicker and hit more contested shots, but Walter has more tricks in his bag when he gets in a jam.

Their biggest difference is shooting from deep. Walter has just been an abysmal 3-point shooter (he's shooting 24% in Big 12 play), and George never blinked off like this from range for this long. But skill-wise they're really close.

I personally don't agree with this, but look I am not saying one is better all around. I am just saying I think George is a better pure scorer than Walter, way better handles and moves to the basket and ability to hit off balanced shots. I have not seen that from Walter, nor the back to basket moves. He has great form and historically a good shooter, but he is struggling with the step up in competition. On the flip side I think while his man to man is weak he plays passing lane defense well and does a great job of anticipating where the ball is coming from while playing his man.

I think Walter has more mid range game than KG and is a better rebounder. KG was better at the contested shot from 3 point land. KG is a better passer and we would have seen more of it if he was matched with Missi.

Both have high ceilings and are very young.

I think George had way more "tricks." He was a ridiculous tough shot maker but he made efficient possibilities way more difficult than they had to be. He had freshman issues, but he also carried us to wins in the @ Wvu and @ tech game. Also closed the Arkansas game at home.

Outside of Auburn, Walter really hasn't taken over for us. A little disappointing but no time like Saturday to start knocking down big 3s.

No doubt Walker will have a shot at impressing scouts if he shows well. Stating the obvious but Houston's D is the best will face all year. He could improve his draft stock tremendously in one game.
I don't think we have had more than 1-2 games where everyone has shown up. That's what we are going to need on Sat. If either Shead or Cryer are off, it's possible to win this one.

I don't think we need anything special. Houston is good but not great on the road. Every decent team they've played away from home has gone down to the wire. Tbf, losing Love hurts badly I admit.

Our inability to close combined with Shead's new found offensive level in the clutch is my main concern. He's carried them to 3 wins in razor tight late road games.

Drew needs to make them understand losing at home simply is not an option. If we come out with sustained high energy I like their chances. But I'm not confident they will come out fired up. Too often we look like we rolled out the ball and play. Hou will give sustained high effort, guaranteed.

Agree with this, and especially KG's passing. With Missi, we would have seen how good his passing really was. I do not think JW has that super skill right now. I do think the ankle really hurt KG at the end. I am afraid we may see the same problem with LL this year where he is never 100%.

I love Walter as a player and everything he stands for as a person, but what makes KG stand out as the better prosepct is his elite court vision and PG skills. As we are witnessing, that translates very well at the next level.

Love Walter, but I think he tenses up on his short and mid range jumper. Appears to be short arming just a little., enough for the ball to clank off the rim. Feel like he needs to relax when taking those shots and not have his mind spin around everything going on around him. A very uneducated opinion. Just softly put it on the basket.

Agreed, but Walter was the most talented player on the floor yesterday.. and it really wasn't that close outside of Bridges. He looked like a pro. They both popped if you were watching for pro potential. Those two and Roberts (Houston) were easily the 3 best players on the floor.

Walter coming off screens and rising up along with some creative (not spectacular) mid range moves is why scouts will like the potential.

NBA drafts on potential not current stats. They predict he will someday be good enough to play in the NBA.
I have found theres only two ways to go:
Living fast or dying slow.
I dont want to live forever.
But I will live while I'm here.
