Punishment for Flagrant II (or is it 2?)

When I saw the jerk from Texas blindside body block the Tech player into the table I had a three thoughts:

1. The guy who was blindsided could have been hurt badly...glad it didn't happen.

2. 25 year old Texas player seemed to enjoy it and revel in it. I sure wish it had cost his team the game.

3. In football a player can be suspended for a portion of the next game for making a play that's deemed to be extremely dangerous.

Would it not put a damper on dangerous plays in basketball, like the one last night, if the offending player had to sit out half of the next game?

Just wondering.....

Same thought crossed my mind as the dirtiest player in the league was being serenaded off the court.

If you get a Flagrant 2, there should be a carryover to the next game. And it is much rarer in hoops than it is in football.

The reason the rule exists in football is because the sport of football as a whole was getting major heat from the public regarding concussions and CTE. A harsh rule was put in place to try to reduce the number concussions.

While the same spirit should apply to blatant fouls like the one in the OP, the truth is, there isn't enough pressure for the sport of basketball to make similar rule changes at this point. The sport isn't facing the same kind of backlash and social pressure to make changes, because honestly, this happens so rarely. And this player may end up getting a suspension, it certainly would be unheard of to suspend a player, but I don't expect a hard rule to be implemented anytime soon like we saw in football.
