What changes and roster additions are y'all hoping for heading into the 24/25 season?
I truly believe we need to get a defensive specialist on staff. It's a glaring weakness that hopefully Drew addresses.
Player wise we're looking at a boatload of turnover. Really hoping we bring in a few defensive minded guards. Gonna need an alpha forward from the portal as well as a solid back up. Lastly, a center to back up Josh O who I think will make a big leap.
Just one man's opinion, whatcha all thinking ?

I see next season as a bridge year to getting the roster back into a healthier rhythm and deep tournament contention.

We already have a lot of guards coming in. I think someone will be the odd man out. It wouldn't shock me to see one transfer out (but before the season, not during).

I feel the same way. I think we'll take a small step back next year. But I'm willing to endure/embrace it if it starts a shift back to building more veteran, developmentally focused teams.

I agree it's time for new coaching staff changes. Would love to see mike boynton join the staff. Seems like Jakus will be gone, if Brooks runs the defense then I hope he gets a job t too.

I think we need to politely tell Nunn to transfer somewhere else, he's got no business starting he clashes with Love's play style and he can't run the point. Replacing him with a point guard that can defend is crucial.

If missi goes pro we need another big man and two guys to play the 4. Not sure what the guys playing the 4 should look like, but I might suggest not Caleb Lohner.

We got Nunn, Love, Miro, Lohner, and Josh O coming back right?

I like Nunn and Miro, lots of potential with them

Love is a dog but his history with injuries scares me, some folks just can't stay healthy and I'm scared he's one of them, idk what to do with him

Josh O is getting better every year, I would hold onto him

I hate seeing dudes transfer out but Lohner has been very inconsistent for me

We need Mark Vital 2.0 and a point guard that can defend and not be a turnover machine.

I am not sold on Miro. Nunn won several games for us this year. Love was great and should be a star next year if he stays healthy. We do need another guard from the portal. Josh will be very good next year, but we need a good backup from the portal. We also need a starting forward from the portal.

I think Robert Wright is going to start at point unless we get an amazing find in the Portal.

I would like to find a 3 and D forward like Bridges. My understanding is Asemota is not going to be ready as a B12 starter and that's not a knock.

I'm gonna be greedy and say I want a mobile power forward who can guard on the perimeter and switch onto guards, also a good passer and can knock down a 15-18 foot jumper. Someone who knows how to use their body.

You keep him. That's what you do.

The book on Cryer was that he could never stay healthy, but he sure managed to do it his final year down there.

He technically has another year and alluded to that in an interview in the middle of the season. I have no idea what his plans are though.

Unless Ndjonga is ready to contribute immediately, and I hope he is, I think we need both a small forward and a power forward.

One of this team's greatest weaknesses is we didn't have the depth or roster flexibility to bench one of our primary guards when their play was hurting us. We had no real alternative but to let them play through their struggles.

Love's injury hurt tremendously in this regard, but the bigger culprit was Lohner's inability to competently fill a rotation role, which left us with one viable forward and playing three guards at virtually all times.

I'd love to get a true small forward and a power forward (again if Ndjonga can't be that guy), so that we can go big for stretches and rest guards to send a message. We need more in-game accountability, and the only way IMO to accomplish that is being able to bench guys when they're hurting the team.

Unless Wright is the best recruit in the history of this program and a rock solid one and done, we've got a massive hole at starting point guard again. There's no way Wright and Little are ready to be starting big 12 point guards.

That's not a knock on them and that doesn't mean I don't like them, it's just the reality of the situation. We've got to address this gap or accept being a bubble team next year.

I'm willing to use next year as a developmental year if we think those two will be special players as juniors/seniors. Let them take their lumps and grow.

I'm tired of having revolving doors at the most important positions on the court.

Agreed, in a perfect world we probably need Nunn recruited over for an experienced guy who can lead. Nunn was clearly a 2nd or 3rd choice last year when we didn't land people in the portal/recruiting. If we think Miro can develop to a better player than him, I would rather move Nunn than little for an experienced point. Nunn has limited upside and completely fades against good competition.

I disagree. I think Nunn was an important part of our team who will only be better for us next season, if he returns.

I wouldn't touch the guard corps. Let the three we have and the two we have coming in handle all those minutes. It's the frontcourt where we need an infusion of talent and experience.

Did you see Nunn running point last night? That was painful but also exactly how he plays when he runs the point.

Roster construction has totally changed. There was a time when tough ball denial defense was the way with Duke in the late 90s. Then Michigan State's junkyard rebounding mentality. And the game continued to evolve.

Coach Drew loves to recruit gifted offensive players on the theory that you can teach them defense. But they don't stick around long enough to make an impact in March.

I don't think it is as simple as recruit a small forward or a power forward. I think the real question is a philosophical one about how to build a team and play. Get old and stay old should be the mantra.

Last night was a good example: we needed heft to deal with the larger size of the older Clemson roster. That pressed Loehner into service and Clemson clogged the middle on our pick and roll plays. The easy lobs at the basket disappeared because Clemson could help off the weak side. Not for nothing, Missi sat the last five or so minutes.

I think Baylor plays a beautiful brand of offensive basketball. In a vacuum, I think it is ideal. But the roster for that offense has implications for the defense and I don't know if it works in a world where UCONN had and average age roster of 21.3 last year (older this year on the steering 5) and the KU and Baylor were over 22 average age when they recently won NCs.

An honest philosophical conversation needs to be entertained on roster construction of the future.

I am high on Miro Little. A healthy Love and Little have a lot of defensive flexibility together. Nunn is just bad defensively. I don't think he offense makes up for it. They had to switch Rayj last night to the white Clemson guard because he was killing Nunn on simple sets/actions. Like it is shocking how badly Nunn deals with screens.

He's not a point guard. That doesn't mean he doesn't have utility or value. I'm not penciling him into point guard minutes next season. He's sharing the second and third guard spots with Love and Edgecombe, and he'll do well in that role.

You're preaching to the choir on the over-arching recruiting philosophy of the program, but you can't change that in one offseason.

Going forward I want to bring in more players who will be here two-plus years and fewer who will be making one-year layovers on their way to other things. But our high school class is already signed and we've still got roster holes to fill if we hope to be competitive in 2024-25. It's OK to discuss how best to fill those holes, and it can done as part of a larger conversation on the future direction of our program.

I'd love:

-someone who can get us a bucket when we open a game and shoot 1-20 from the three.

-defensive big man who can move do work in the paint and get boards.

-a point guard that won't have 4 turnovers a game.

-someone with ice in their veins to close a game with, free throws or a big bucket.

I think that's what Drew likes to do and was able to do expertly before the portal & NIL changed everything. Now, that might not be possible. Would we be able to get players like Mitchell AND Teague to sit out a full year before playing? And then stick around for an additional year? Doubtful. Granted they came back because covid caused postseason to hd cancelled. The pint is, however, we were in a unique circumstance that allowed us to continue developing elite talent. We may never have that opportunity again.

That's fine the 2010 team was totally capable of winning a national championship it was built with similar philosophy but didn't have the guys sitting and waiting like you discussed.

This is why I think we have to run off someone like Nunn though. He's not a point guard, he's a ball dominant 2. We've got a much better one of those in Langston Love. Nunn is going to have to move to the bench because Drew HAS to have someone running the point aside from Wright.

We've got too many 2 guards, in my eyes Nunn is the least talented of the bunch. We need point guards, the problem is the two point guards on the roster for next year Miro and Wright are highly unlikely to be capable of leading an offense.

We'll have two point guards next year, so it's irrelevant that Nunn isn't one. And he's not a ball-dominant player. He's a good college off guard who can drive the lane and finish/get fouled or knock down a catch-and-shoot 3 at a really high clip.

I'm not really understanding your take on Nunn. He was our best player in some of our biggest wins after Love went down. And there's little reason to think he won't be a better player next year with a full year of experience in our system.

He, Love and Edgecombe should have no problem whatsoever sharing the minutes at the second and third guard spots. And all can be complementary pieces. You don't get rid of good, experienced, proven contributors if there's no good reason to do so IMO.

The 3 freshman are going to expect playing time. Josh O at C.

At least one portal C, SG and F for depth. A PG that has started a college game would be nice, but could be hard with what we have already.

Our current roster if no one leaves and everyone comes who is supposed to contains nine scholarship players. It will be interesting to see what Drew does with the final four.

Guards
  • Miro Little
  • Robert Wright
  • Jayden Nunn
  • Langston Love
  • VJ Edgecombe
Forwards
  • Yanis Ndonga
  • Jason Asemota
Posts
  • Josh Ojianwuna
  • Noah Boyed
I would like a portal small forward and power forward for sure. It gets trickier at the guard position because adding someone eliminates minutes for one of the five currently projected on our roster. I don't know how you add a guard without pushing someone else out of your program, and it would almost certainly be Little, who is one of precious few developmental players we've recruited the last three years.

Asemota isn't ready to contribute imo. We're razor thin at Forward/Center. I'd be willing to bet we upgrade I'm at Center and Forward. Drew will bring in an alpha forward. The center we reached out to from Rutgers is a dog

I'm not counting on Asesmota being anything more than a back of the rotation player. I want an impact small forward and power forward transfer.

The great thing about college ball is you don't need a true center and we've already got two. If we were to get a physical/athletic power forward, he could easily handle minutes at the five when we go "small."

A lot depends on how healthy Boyed is and what he looks like when he arrives. But if he can handle the backup five minutes, I'd rather focus our energy on skilled forwards to play around the two bigs we already have. But those are big ifs and we need to make sure we have guys in our rotation who can handle the roles they're being asked to fulfill.

If we can get the Omoruyi kid out of Rutgers to split the load with Josh, I certainly wouldn't be disappointed. But I think we need some skill in the frontcourt to replace what we're losing with Bridges and never got from Lohner.
