Ashley Hodge: Scott Drew Appears to be the Lead Candidate for the Kentucky Job

Keen observation....

I think the hunch that Drew will remain at Baylor is wrong. I'd actually put it at 70% that he will soon call old Kentucky home.

Most of his great assistants have jumped ship; why wouldn't he?

We need to be scrambling the search committee immediately so we don't lose our entire team in the portal once the contracts are signed.

We're going to lose our team to the portal regardless of who we hire if Drew leaves.
If he leaves 24/25 is likely a huge rebuild

Other than that, thank God we have an awesome AD and president

With the portal, you can build a competitive team on the fly. You won't build a championship team in one year, but you can be competitive.

Exactly.

I'm honestly not worried either way. I hope Drew stays and retires at Baylor, obviously. But if he leaves, we'll hire a good coach and continue to build on the excellent foundation he laid/left.

I don't recall that at all. I recall 6-10 and 4-12 conference records with Lawrence Roberts, Terry Black and other guys that were pretty good players. Severely underachieving teams.

I do remember being concerned that Tom Stanton was leaving. He seemed to do everything right except oversee football. There used to be a poster on here that used "SheetMusicMan" as his screen name. I always thought that was a clever poke at Stanton.

Correct. Bliss wasn't all that great even before he kidney punched the program.

I don't recall that at all. I recall 6-10 and 4-12 conference records with Lawrence Roberts, Terry Black and other guys that were pretty good players. Severely underachieving teams.

I do remember being concerned that Tom Stanton was leaving. He seemed to do everything right except oversee football. There used to be a poster on here that used "SheetMusicMan" as his screen name. I always thought that was a clever poke at Stanton.

You don't recall the scandal, the departure of Roberts along with the majority of scholarship players? You don't remember the call for Baylor to cancel the coming season, the release of our players by the Baylor President, allowing them to play at Texas, Ok State immediately? There was serious concern we would have enough players to play a season. Yes, Roberts, Lucas, Black were good players--the first two became Conference Players of the Year after exiting Baylor. For all his illicit recruiting, Bliss never came close to a .500 season in the conference, and he came closer to destroying the program. Drew took over a program everyone else in the basketball world was running away from.

Not exactly.

Will he leave it better? Absolutely!

But the cupboard will be bare because of the portal. We're talking a two to three year rebuild just to get competitive in conference again - if we can attract the right coach for the job.

My wish is for Jakus or Tang. They are as much responsible for where we are as Drew right now and they might be able to keep some of the team on campus.

By the way, if Kentucky, who has struggled to get out of the first weekend of the NCAA tournament hires Drew, who has also struggled to get out of the first weekend of the NCAA tournament, maybe it's a good fit.

In the portal era, bare cupboards can happen from one year to the next under established coaches, and they don't require two- or three-year rebuilds to overcome.

If you want to know what post-Drew Baylor would look like, you can likely look no further than Kansas State or Tech. Both Tang and McCasland inherited good programs with bare cupboards and won immediately because they're good recruiters and coaches.

If you can get good transfers to your program, and Baylor should have no trouble doing so, you never have to rebuild in the traditional sense. The portal makes it possible to reload every season. You likely won't build championship teams in one year that way. But you can certainly build competitive ones.
