"Compares to" is a generous reading of that quote. Drew mentioned Gathers and Barkley to illustrate that you don't need to be oversized to be a beast on the boards, not that Omier reminds him of Barkley or has his skill set.

I thought it a bit of a stretch too. It's designed to grab attention and it worked. If we are very lucky, I might develop into someone like Barkley while at Baylor. I don't expect l that.
