If Wright's a real talent whose ready, then this is the 2021/2022 team and only health will determine our outcome.

I will lurk and attack anyone who says anything bad about Robert Wright this year. Kid stayed completely committed to us for almost two full years while school after school kept trying to recruit him hard. It would have been easy to be swayed by UConn, St. Johns, Villanova and several Northeastern schools much closer to his home. But unlike most other recruits in the age of NIL he stayed true to his word. That deserves respect from our fans.

Wright should be a high level, competent backup. He is extremely advanced skill wise. If Love can get healthy, throwing Love, Wright, and Celestine off the bench is tough.

Wright has played consistent high level competition but I'm sure there will be adjustments to the size and physicality considering he's undersized and a competent but not special athlete. I'm bullish on Wright.

Best freshman he's seen in Waco? Wow!
If he's better than Jeremy Sochan & Keyonte George then he will be special this season. Unfortunately we will only have him for one season because he's a first rounder.

His athleticism and effort are special. By far the best athlete in this freshman class and will probably be the best explosive athlete in the big 12 on Day 1. Still expect some growing pains but he is different

Sounds great! I hope this results in lots of wins and a deep tournament run.

I'm sure Edgecombe is an outstanding young prospect and hopefully he'll have a great season and be part of a deep Tournament run in March, but having been generally disappointed with the multiple highly hyped 5 star one and done types we've had through the years, I'm not going to get overly excited until I see him consistently perform at a high level on both ends of the floor and consistently play like the instant difference maker he's touted to be.

It's a matter of perspective and realistic expectations. I generally have not been disappointed with our recent one-and-done guys. Taking a look at them in reverse chronological order:

  • Walter - shot a horrific 38% field goal percentage, but overall was not a disappointment. Had a high motor and gave effort (albeit with mixed results) on the defensive end.
  • Missi - played well above expectations and carried us in a few games on both ends down the stretch. His untimely injury slowed him in the tournament and spelled our demise. Pre-injury was not even close to being a disappointment.
  • Keyonte - shot a horrible 38% field goal percentage and Baylor fans will remember the hero ball, poor shot selection, and bad defense. I was personally not a big fan of his style of play. However the grit and effort were there as he played through a concussion and a badly sprained ankle which hurt his play going into the tournament.
  • Sochan - absolute monster down the stretch, not remotely a disappointment by any measure
  • Kendall Brown - played a passive style that left much to be desired. Objectively a bust/disappointment relative to expectations.

Looking at the above list, Kendall is probably the only one who could be labeled a straight bust. Walter and Keyonte were a mixed bag. They had the talent and played hard but killed us with poor defensive fundamentals and bad shooting. If they would have cleaned up their shooting %s they would have helped us more. The common denominator is they were relied upon too heavily to supply high volume offensive production.

Hopefully our coaching staff will not rely on Edge to put up too many perimeter shots in half-court situations. If he can focus on getting easy transition buckets, play-making, and defense as opposed to volume scoring it will help us. I have read that Edge is developing PG skills so let him showcase getting others involved. Let Roach and Omier be our primary scorers so Edge can be our #3 scoring option which would allow him to play with more offensive efficiency.

That's fair and rational. George was once hyped as much as VJ earlier in his hs run, but wasn't the athlete and wasn't as conditioned. He was highly skilled but struggled at times in his role. He was asked to play outside himself at times so was way up and then came back down. I was high on his skill level and he showed it in flashes.

I'm not putting the expectation on him but he fits the role of this team really well. He has seasoned vets that can get there own which George didn't have. I whiffed on Walter's defense. He showed decent ability in HS and really struggled with it here.

I believe the defensive coaching will be improved with the staff changes. We just need Vj to play good defense, get out in transition, get to the lane/rim. Everything else is gravy

Key word you said was his "role." He should have been the point guard and lead decision maker…No way he was this good last season in the NBA and couldn't have done it two seasons ago if given the chance.

All the "George was a disappointment dudes" need to start by explaining how this could be!

I agree his role wasn't a great fit that year. I think he could have been more effective has he been here other years. I've always been high on his skills.

He is really, really skilled. Every school but Ku and Arizona would be hyping Wright non stop if he was their recruit. Bc Drew recruits at such a high level he has somehow become an afterthought.

He is one of the 5 best freshmen in the conference next year, might not get to completely show it.

I like Roach a lot, but It appears to me Wright is much faster than anyone we have had at the position since Pierre Jackson.
