Peace with you Stefano. You are one of the old dudes in here. Bilas was just talking about Phi Slamma Jamma and its 3 consecutive trips to the Final Four in the 1980s. You were around then. What were they missing that kept them from winning any of the 3 ?

Even though he's in the Hall of Fame their coach was often criticized for being out coached in big games . especially the two title games against Valvano of NC St.and John Thompson of Georgetown...NC State slowed tempo and he had no answer.

And they were the worst free throw shooting team almost every year.So in close games it was a liability.

LJ now 11-16 from the field, 5-7 from 3, 27 points overall. Every time Iowa St gets it to 1 or 2, Cryer hits another. We've seen that Cryer several times. Such a prolific scorer when he gets hot.

Cryer when his feet are set is the best shooter I can remember

The joke back then was the Guy Lewis's primary coaching skill was inflating the balls before practice. UH had far and away the most talent back then, but they were like a rec league champion: they primarily out-athleted everyone. When an opponent forced them into having to think a strategy, that's when they got beat.

In 1982 Rob Williams tried to single handedly beat Georgetown in the semis and went something like 4-30 in the game. His draft stock dropped dramatically.

We all know what happened in 1983: NCSt took the air out of the ball and UH didn't know how to respond. In 1984, Georgetown and Ewing finally had equal or more talent than them.

Drexler and Olajuwon had very successful NBA careers, but what was most telling was that the 3rd most talented player Michael Young was a first round pick of the Celtics and got cut in training camp.

Headband guy is a good basketball player. Again tonight he's single handedly keeping BYU even with Arizona. They have no answer for his hustle.

Fran was correct. He is gonna end up 1st team all Big 12.

BYU up 5 on Arizona in Tucson through the first 10 minutes of the game. Cougars have already played 11 guys in their rotation in the first 10 minutes.

Depth is becoming more and more popular. The days of 7-8 guys seem to be ending. Hopefully Drew goes that route

I'm not sure whether it's the intensity level, changes in the game today, size of the athletes or whatever, but all teams seem to continually have 1-3 guys out with sickness and/or short term or long term injury. Some coaches are adjusting to the new world (see: Oates, Pearl, Otzelberger, Sampson, Scheyer, even the BYU guy as well as others) and ensuring their roster has the necessary playable depth. Others are not and are paying for it. Unfortunately we are one of the latter.

Since they were mentioned earlier in this thread.

South Carolina blows Texas out tonight by 15 in Columbia for their first SEC win of the year, Texas team that is well above TCU and Cincinnati in both KenPom and Net.

SC would be hovering around .500 in the B12 this year

Good game in Tucson with both teams shooting for > 50% for the first half.

BYU up 47-44 at the half.

What a game in the Desert.... Arizona is turning into Must See TV this year.

One of the better games of the season imo. AZ has played a few ridiculously good cbb games this year

And there it is. BYU is basically becoming what I thought we would become over the course of the year -- a team that was searching to put it together in November but gradually get better and would by a team of reckoning by mid February.

Red hot Cougars now have won 4 in a row and are peaking at the right time.

I don't care much for Arizona football but the addition of Arizona basketball was a prime coup for the Big 12.

Bears now in a 2 way tie for 7th place that could become a 4 way tie by tomorrow night.

I was fascinated by their coaching search .. they're situation is similar to us on the religion thing hiring a coach..

Some of the names I had never heard of.. even the Mavericks assistant who was in the running.

This guy..plus their NIL commitment..and his NBA background...he might be a problem to deal with going forward..

Totally agree. This guy knows what he's doing and they are obviously putting a warchest in front of him to use in a conference with a lot of visibility and a school mission with worldwide reach and name. He could rack up a lot of talent.

No AZ fan here, but they really got screwed by the refs at the end of that BYU game to allow the Cougars to win it from the line. Totally understand why their fans were livid at the end.

Not sure it required a '**** Mormons' chant at end by fans .

And a lot of pushing and shoving in handshake line

And I'm sick of these Four Corners Schools with these snide comments about the Big 12.. Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd had one .. They could have rotted in the Pac 12 as far as I'm concerned.

Seriously? I didn't hear this, but I turned it off as the final shot failed. That's pretty sorry. Seems like an odd chant for a state where Mormons only trail Catholics in the state's makeup.

Just more evidence of why you don't go into a season with only 7 or 8 guys who can play.
There's no team in college basketball that hasn't had injuries or sickness throughout the year.
In this case, Tech without 2 prime starters.

Sampson doing voodoo or something? I thought Iowa st was down two major guys as well. Uncanny

I'll say this much for LJ. Not a lot of guys get to look back over their college careers and count a National Championship and 4 conference championships between two schools as part of their college basketball resume.

Houston has a really good team but their fatal flaw in the NCAAs will be that they simply can't score at a pace like Duke, Auburn, Bama and Florida (which is the reason they lost to both Auburn and Bama earlier in the year). They're pretty efficient on offense with metrics, but in actual play they just can't match bucket to bucket in a fast scoring game.

Either way, the Big 12 now runs through Houston as they win their 2nd consecutive conference championship and probably will end up winning it by at least 4 games before all is said and done.
