Agreed, this whole thing sucks. I just can't get excited about watching college sports with this BS. This is why there is a G league. They need to allow kids to go there right out of high school.

The whole thing is just garbage for 90% of schools. Than you have the rare case of a program wallowing in mediocrity like BYU who are now reaping the benefits for no reason other than their alumni's have deep pockets. Just ****ing sucks what college athletics have come too.
Can we boo student athletes for poor performance or is that still not acceptable?
I have no qualms with Rob getting paid or him leaving Baylor. My issue with him and his dad is the way it was handled. They should have been honest upfront with Drew and let him know they were open to other offers so Drew could have managed his side of the piece and considered money allocations to several really good players that we didn't go after because we already had so much tied up with Rob. They basically screwed us because Drew is a trusting gentleman.
Rob is a good player and he's likely to get even better. But he's not this unstoppable guard some in our fan base thought him to be. He was pretty well contained any time he ran into a taller guards with wide wingspans. Some of his inconsistency will continue to improve with experience and he should definitely bolster some of their play. And, to his advantage, BYU won't expect him to play defense, which is good because his defensive efficiency ratings were in the bottom 10% of the Big 12.
BYU is gonna be an interesting watch. Texas has thought for years in various sports, even pre NIL, that buying top flight athletes is all you have to do to win it all. Funny thing, you don't see any national championship banners on the 40 acres in football going on 2 decades soon or basketball ever. Buying top flight athletes doesn't mean they will mix well together and form a cohesive team, which is what it takes to win a championship. We'll see whether there are enough basketballs to go around for Dybantsa (who has never seen a shot he didn't take), Saunders and Rob. I enjoyed watching BYU play offense this year, and it's likely they'll be good at it again next year.

If true, how could we possibly blame Rob for taking this money? It's not like he's going to get a degree from either institution. He'll get $3.5M to wear a minor league basketball jersey with BYU rich alums as its corporate sponsor, and likely barely whiff a classroom. Of course Coach Drew is an awesome person and it's worth a lot to play for his program, but this strikes me as a ridiculous overvaluation. I believe that would be a major chunk of our whole NIL budget --- how could we possibly justify that? If your a rich Baylor alum how you could swallow that? Crazy.
Don't think this craziness will last. Even if you are a super high wealth individual how can you justify paying $3.5M for a one year rental of a minor league basketball player? Someone is trying to find ultimate value and meaning in helping their alma mater basketball team succeed --- how else could you explain this? And whoever is doing this is of course not the only one.

We can blame him because he signed a 1.5 million contract to stay with BU. He had this staff believing/relying on him staying true to his word. They literally didn't bring in players because they were banking on Rob staying true to his word. Had Rob been honest from the get go that he was bolting the moment someone offers more than it's a different story. There's literally nothing to indicate that was the case. This staff was by all accounts completely blindsided

While what Rob Wright did sucks, it is up to Drew and crew to keep a pulse on his players. I think if someone gets blindsided, at least some of the fault rests with the one who was blindsided.
Drew needs to start finding ways to retain his players. Kelvin Sampson knows how to do this. Marquette has found reasonable success not dipping into the portal every year.

I think Wright's a good player with a chance to be really good. But he's not remotely worth $3.5 million. Not even close.

If there is a legitimate contract that extended beyond the freshman season, then there could be a case for tortious interference against BYU. However, as scholarships are typically renewable year to year, it might be argued that any NIL agreement is subject to the scholarship, making the multiyear NIL unenforceable.IowaBear said:

The new proposed NCAA settlement does away with scholarships entirely, which might make the contracts with players somewhat more enforceable. Whatever happens in the future, the problem Baylor is facing is not really how we manage the NIL (though there is room for improvement) nor the criticisms of recruitment, player development, etc... The Big 12 and the other power conferences are essentially now pro leagues, without the legal and competitive restraints on the teams that can keep some semblance of sanity. If the Dallas Cowboys, the Lakers, and the Yankees or Dodgers (who are already there) had the ability to spend 3 times as much as other teams for players, and then reach into any team and get a player they wanted, with no impunity, what do you think would be the outcome? They would only be successful about 90% of the time in getting the top player they wanted.

If they really are paying him 3.5 million which would be ridiculous that they would be willing to do that I would add, then I doubt he has to give up a damn thing except the green and gold uniform.
Btw they really need to make these contracts binding, meaning to get out of it, the school needs buy a player out of his deal.

If $3.5 million is the going rate for an 11.5 ppg 35% 3 point shooter who just came off a miserable game in the NCAA tournament (3-14, 0 3 point FG) then this whole thing is out of whack.

BYU was one of his better games for sure. We still lost. If BYU feels he's worth it, ok. How many years is he committing for the $3.5? If it's only one, it's no bargain.
Did Rob make off with our 1.5M? Yes or no?
