Wouldn't be a bit surprised if Coach Drew left Baylor for another school with DEEP NIL money in their pockets.

There is no questioning Coach Drew's character and deep belief in God and his Christianity but, he too is a competitor and a coach with a winning record who has turned around what was a near death program into a national champion when there wasn't NIL money.

Yes, college sports sucks now with NIL and I do not watch any college sports other than those that Baylor is playing in, that includes college football playoffs or the NC.

Will be sad if/when CSD leaves Baylor.

He had that chance one year ago and turned it down. You think that NIL and transfer portal just happened this past year.

He could retire earlier than we expect, but outside of a major falling out with administration, Drew isn't going anywhere else for a while.

I think culture is going to take a back seat. It's all about $$ now. The question is does Baylor's administration have the mindset and $$$ to commit and compete in this aggressive dog eat dog era? The days of the student athlete competing for their alma mater are over, and diminishes the whole reason and purpose for college sports. It's evolving into a professional league to feed the NFL/NBA, with nothing to do with education of student athletes or sports competition between universities with teams fielded from their students. You have to ask the question, should universities even be engaged in this type of activity?

No, NIL didn't happen just last year but, college programs are figuring out how better to increase their NIL pots to pay players. Come on, BYU ??? Absurd that they are willing to pay that kind of money for a player but, they did.

I know we ALL hate what has happened to college sports in the past few years with NIL. It used to be getting a full ride college scholarship/education was something every parent and athlete could be proud of and boast to their friends and family. Now, that is superfluous as high school athletes and college athletes are now more interested in how much money they can get rather than the school they attend or the education they receive.

Same here. I've always loved following kids who started off not-so-great and then worked hard on their games and improved each year. I kinda knew the rosters of not only our team but most others as well. An occasional one-and-done was fine because even though he was leaving the rest of the team was largely going to be returning. I am definitely asking myself if I will be as interested in 3-5 years with college sports as I have previously.

I have yet to see anything anywhere other than the people on here indicate that we've got a deep pockets NIL issue. We were one of the highest spending teams last year, we will be up there again this year. How our money is spent vs having enough to spend seems to have been the biggest problem in past years.

1. BYU is a national school. They have extremely deep pockets and will be buying players for as long as this remains the Wild West.
2. The concept of NIL is a good thing. No, we ALL don't think that a scholarship is the only thing that players should receive, especially when they are the reason coaches and schools and conferences take in billions of dollars.
3. The NCAA and schools could have fixed this years ago with reasonable NIL deals and guardrails on transferring, but they put their heads in the sand and tried to keep the money for themselves.
4. And be honest. The big money schools that you think Drew will go to now were already paying players under the table. I'm sure Baylor was too. So if Drew didn't go to the biggest job in the world last year, I doubt he'll tuck tail and run next year…once again unless there is a problem with administration.

I agree totally with the NCAA as culprit. This is a train wreck coming for 10 years down the track.
Also, before there was on the table payments there was under the table. I'm not at all convinced the the NIL did away with the utd. For a 20 year old, no delayed gratification or contingencies or complicating formulas with cash under the dorm room door.

yep, BYU is akin to Notre Dame except that they quite literally have the backing of the entire Mormon/Latter Day Saints faith community. not quite your average private school.

Wasn't their HC a coach in the NBA for a while?

Do they have others that were NBA coaches?

Or people that were office staff or something?

Seems to me he is talking about one coach having NBA experience and turning it into the whole program has NBA experience.

And even though drew has no NBA experience he has put a lot of players into the league.

So, is he giving the $3.5mm back? Guessing Papa and the agent say no.

Players who sign the mega deal should be cautioned about answering in this way. Juan Soto signed for $765mm, "but it wasn't about the money." It just makes them sound ridiculous.

That sounds like the Nico team talking about leaving Tennessee for UCLA because of the offensive system. You know it's not true, but it's what they're going with.

Everyone knows it's about NIL. Not sure why they have to make up something so farcical.

Yes, Kevin Young came to BYU by way of the NBA, where he had spent time with the 76ers and Suns, after coaching for several years in the G League.

I'm sure that's what Wright is talking about.

Head coach Kevin Young... former Suns assistant.

Brought a bunch of NBA assistants with him.

ESPN.com had an article recently how he's transforming the program like a NBA team as far as diet, strength training, etc.

Do they have a human taffy pull? Because without that or a late growth spurt, Rob Wright will still be 5-11 when his time at BYU is over.

I believe he also plans to test the draft, so he may not be making a quick decision. Scout reports indicate he needs to develop better pg skills to make the first round. In short, he is not a classic point guard as of yet, but a great scorer, athletic, would love to have him in the green and gold, er, or whatever color our jerseys are, moment to moment...

Don't see any chance on the Memphis kid. If they pulled that off would put the team very solidly Into very serious contender status, both conference and nationally
