Maybe this thread would be easier if we just assumed every player from every team was entering the transfer portal, and we note if someone significant is actually returning to the same team? Maybe we also start a thread about a d1 college football or basketball player reporting about going to class or taking a test or something. I would actually find that fascinating.

Kohl Rosario is officially the only scholarship player at KU to not declare for the portal or NBA draft or run out of eligibility.

Bill Self starts with 1 returning player and 3 freshmen who have signed to play in the fall.

Luke Murray is known as a no nonsense coach. It is my understanding Asemota didn't have a choice to come back here and he didn't have a choice to stay at BC. When a player is not asked back at 2 schools, you can likely guess why. Oh, that and he was suspended I think twice by BC's prior coaching staff this year.

Massamba Diop, the Arizona St 7'1" freshman and Top 25 portal entrant, apparently ented the portal with a DNC (Do Not Contact) tag with a pledge to Gonzaga. St. John's apparently contacted his agents anyway and now Diop is choosing between Gonzaga and St. Johns.

it was said on the premium side but though it is frustrating this is likely a case of the staff not wanting willing to overpay. Go get a guy with higher defensive upside for a bit cheaper, no complaints from me.

Not surprised, I didn't think we would be able to afford tounde if he decided to return for another year of college basketball. Our first priorities are a point guard to pair with Williams and an elite defensive minded big.

I would love to keep Tounde and think he could be all big-12 level next year with a more well-balanced team. Hope this means we're keeping Carr. But until the whole roster comes together it's really impossible to judge any particular financial decision.

Check out the 247 profile of Roach coming out of high school. We didn't even need to pay some kind of fancy service to find out he wasn't athletic enough to justify the price. This was free and front and center on the most popular recruiting cite in the country.

Solidly built, sturdy lead guard with average length and fine athleticism. Plays low to the ground. Plays through contact. Can score at all three levels. Strong with basketball and can find teammates. Willing defender with defensive prowess to defend either guard position. Solid mindset and good leader. Doesn't overwhelm, though, in any specific aspect.

We bought two dues with final four experience for premium prices, but that doesn't help you that much if you don't get out of the first weekend because not athletic enough. I also think guys with one year to play are inherently high risk, particularly if not trying to get to the NBA. Ex. A Roach. Ex. B Rataj. If this is their last real basketball paycheck, they're too likely to end up at the golf course or McDonald's instead of grinding to get to the next level.

The strange thing to me about the portal is that, with few exceptions, no school is safe from their players leaving. My initial thought is that blue bloods and big money schools would be able to hold onto their players. But it feels like every player is leaving every school every year.

I think agents are encouraging every player to enter the portal to see what their maximum value is. That's probably ok for guys who are still wanted by their existing coaching staffs as the player can still exit the portal and resign with the existing school if the player finds out he's not valued any higher by other schools. For some coaches, I'm sure it's once you say you're leaving for the portal then you're not on my team any longer. And then some weaker players (poor souls) are entering the portal thinking there's a bigger payday somewhere else and they not only don't find a new home paying as much but they also aren't welcome back at their existing school.

Yep. This is where it was always headed with Tounde, and I never really expected him back although him may surprise me. Schools with money like Kentucky, Duke, St. John's, Tech and others can afford to pay him more than us and still have money left over to buy other players who cover some of Tounde's areas where he is not as good. If we want to have a complete team, we simply can't afford to overpay for 1 player and be back where we've been for several years with 6 or 7 active players.

People can look back through this thread. It's not Scott Drew or Baylor. This is just what college basketball is now. Look at Kansas -- only 1 returning player (for now) to one of the bluest of bluebloods.
