I love me some Luka, but he traveled like crazy on this play. Established his right foot as his pivot foot, slides it backward (traveling) and then takes a step into his pass (traveling again). Nifty pass fake, but should have been a turnover.

This dude's going to be a franchise player. A draft-day coup on the level of Dirk Nowitzki. Hopefully, he'll stick with the Mavs as long.

He's the best player to enter the league in a decade. 20 years old and plays like he's 30 with more pro experience than half the NBA.

20 & 6 in first 20 games - Magic and Oscar Robertson only others to do that

If we are making a list I would take Giannis (The Greek Freak)

Giannis was a player Donnie Nelson told Cuban to get - he didn't - Cuban listened when he said get Luka

Does that mean they will be good enough to make the playoffs every year, but never have a decent enough draft spot to build a real team that's a major contender every year?

they gave away a lot to get him but he's worth it. I think he's going to attract other players that will want to play with him in a way Dirk was never able to do. Luka is more versatile. Floor game is off the charts.

I think Dirk was the only drafted player when the Mavs won it.

Miami had Wade - Shaq, Bosch, LBJ all trade of FA

The Browns in football have been drafting at the top of the draft for a decade and gone nowhere.

And that short term free agent factor led to my frustration. I had no connection to that team except for Dirk. It was like Seinfeld used to say, it was like rooting for the laundry. My interest in basketball really took a hit when Cuban started bringing in mercenaries every year, then reshuffle, and trading away draft picks year after year. It was just the way the league became, with notable exceptions. It was not a good thing.

I envy the Spurs for how they built their franchise, but I had no history with them, and I'm not a bandwagon jumper kind of guy. I would really love to follow a team that builds mostly through the draft and has a core of players that is fairly consistent and builds a winning tradition with them.

I hear ya.

The reality is no matter how bad for how long you are there is zero guarantee that you will ever get you hands on a HOF post that will be healthy for 12-15 years. or get a Manu or Parker late in the draft - props to the Spurs front office, but you also need the basketball gods to smile on you too.

Because of Luka, most have already forgotten how much they liked the pick of Dennis Smith Jr

I hope it works out. I really want them to build something great around the kid and rejuvenate my interest. I just keep my expectations in check because Cuban gonna Cuban, and this new guy will be the exception rather than the start of a trend that turns into something much bigger.

Agreed. He certainly lives up to his nickname.

An interesting storyline to follow will be Giannis in free agency this upcoming offseason. I predict that he will stay loyal to the Bucks, but maybe having his brother Kostas in our system might be a factor in getting him to Dallas.

That would be a lot of fun. If we can resign DJ to a reasonable deal (and maybe even if we don't), Giannis immediately puts us into serious contention to win the west. Especially considering that Golden State's roster will shuffle some this offseason.

I do, and shuffling feet before and after the dribble draw whistles all the time. It's the extra step off the dribble that often goes uncalled.

He should bolt to let RC coach him in Dallas. The Bucks are irrelevant like Laverne and Shirley. Dallas is great international city for basketball players. Add Gobert after his contract runs out.

The same is largely true of the 76ers, who have just finally become a good, not elite, team after a decade and a half of mediocrity or worse -- and would have stood no chance at even an Eastern Conference crown had Lebron not gone west.

It wasn't until they finally hit on Embiid that five years of tanking paid off.

I thought he just had a birthdate. Maybe it was Dennis Smith.
His mom is hot too.

I thought when Rudy Gobert, an active player and reigning DPOY, endorsed him and questioned the Hawks, Suns, and King's decision to pass on him in the draft that it was good times to be a Mavs fan.

For that trend to turn into something bigger, the Mavericks would need to suck for two or three more years because, unless you're the Spurs, it's rare to find a franchise-changing player outside of the lottery.

I, for one, am glad the Mavericks' tanking days are done and hope they build a championship roster around the young nucleus of Smith and Doncic through trades, free agency, shrewd international pickups and the rare draft-day steal.

Mavs have most cap money in 2019 free agency.

It's time to win again with the goal to get a new basketball arena in Arlington when the AAC lease runs out.

Gobert has a much better PER and is four years younger .... but we have DJ now

Actually expected his impacted to be greater than it has
