PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas — From opening tip to the final whistle of the first half, the Baylor basketball team couldn’t get out of their own way. Four Bears had two turnovers leading to 12 total turnovers in the first 20 minutes of the contest, allowing VCU to build a 36-28 lead that the Bears would need the entire second half to dig out of.

Led by a double-double by Johnathan Motley, the Bears were able to climb out of the hole and reclaim the lead at 52-51 with 6:57 remaining.

After trading baskets with VCU, Baylor went on to extend their lead to five points on an Al Freeman three-point shot. The three pointer by Freeman was during a stretch in which the junior guard scored seven straight points for the Bears.

Following Freeman's mini-run, it was fellow junior guard Manu Lecomte who was able to find the hoop five straight times for the Bears. After an abysmal performance for the first 38 plus minutes, Lecomte scored Baylor's 11 final points. Lecomte finished the game with 16 points including 10-of-11 from the free throw line.

Motley finished the game with 19 points and 10 rebounds while Freeman chipped in 15 points of his own.

The Bears will face the winner of Michigan State and St. John's in the second round of the tournament at 11 a.m. CT on Thursday. The Spartans and Red Storm tip off at 6 p.m. CT Wednesday.
